Born in Lima, Ben Roethlisberger was raised in Findlay by his father, Kenneth Todd Roethlisberger, who played American football as a quarterback and his stepmother. At the age of two, Roethlisberger’s parents divorced and his father went on to marry, Brenda, who raised young Roethlisberger. When he clocked eight, his mother passed on, as a result of a car accident.

As a young kid, sports have always fascinated Roethlisberger, and he didn’t have a hard time embracing it. By the time he was in high school, Roethlisberger was captain of his school’s football, basketball and baseball teams. In high school, Roethlisberger played as a wide receiver, but that didn’t impend his outstanding performance. In his final year in high school, Roethlisberger became the number 1 quarterback.

Following his graduation from high school, Roethlisberger went on to attend Miami University, where he was redshirted in 2000. In his 2001 debut match for Miami against the Michigan Wolverines, he completed 18 passes and scored two touchdowns. He went on to play against the Akron Zips where he registered 399 passing yards, creating a new school passing record. At the end of his first season with the Miami RedHawks, Roethlisberger had 25 completed touchdowns and 3,105 passing yards. 

Roethlisberger put up a really good performance in the 2002 season, which saw him earn a place in the MAC East Special Player of the Week. He finished his season with 3,238 passing yards and completions pegged at 271. A top form Roethlisberger led the RedHawks to a very inspiring outing in the 2003 season. After remaining undefeated, the team went on to win the 2003 GMAC Bowl, and Roethlisberger was named tournament MVP. He ended the season with 4,486 passing yards, 343 completions and touchdowns pegged at 37. He was thus named MAC Offensive Player of the Year and had his #7 jersey retired by the RedHawks, that was the first time in 34 years that the RedHawks had retired a jersey.

Pittsburgh Steelers (2004–date)

In 2004, Roethlisberger decided to enter the NFL draft. He was chosen as the Pittsburgh Steelers 11th pick in the first round, a decision which the Steelers had already made before the draft. In August 2004, he signed a six-year contract with the franchise for $22.26 million. The contract allowed Roethlisberger to earn as much as $17.73 million through incentives. 

In his rookie season, Roethlisberger had the best season start as a rookie after he led the Steelers to 15 wins, the first team in the AFC to achieve the feat. For his performance, the Associated Press named Roethlisberger as the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. He also earned a place in the NFL All-Rookie Team. After missing four games as a result of a knee injury, Roethlisberger came back into action during the divisional playoffs to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to claim the AFC championship. The win booked the Steelers a place in the Super Bowl XL. 

In the Super Bowl XL match against the Seattle Seahawks, Roethlisberger had the lowest passer rating for a quarterback with 22.6. He became the youngest quarterback to claim the Super Bowl at 23. In the 2006 season, despite hopes that the Steelers may qualify for the playoffs, their hope was dashed following a disappointing loss to the Baltimore Ravens. 

In the 2007 season, Roethlisberger was picked to be part of the AFC squad set to play in the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. He also finished third in the Comeback Player of the Year voting. After signing an eight-year contract with the Steelers, for about $102 million, Roethlisberger led his side to win the divisional round as well as the AFC Championship, where they qualified for the Super Bowl XLIII. The next season, the Steelers voted Roethlisberger as team MVP. 

The 2010 season saw the Steelers make another comeback to the Superbowl, but this time, their opponent, the Green Bay Packers owned the night. The 2011 season was business as usual for Roethlisberger who had a good outing, which saw him rated as 30th in the NFL Top 100 Players of 2012. His 2012 season was disappointing as it was his first season that the Steelers didn’t qualify for the playoffs. The Steelers had a similar fate in the 2013 season. In the 2014 season, the Steelers made it to the playoffs but lost in the Wild Card Round. Roethlisberger was thus rated 26th in the NFL Top 100 players of 2015. 

After signing a five-year contract extension with the Steelers, Roethlisberger helped his side progress to the playoffs after battling injury. In the playoffs, the team lost again in the Wild Card Round. He earned a place in the Pro Bowl and ranked 21st in the NFL Top 100 players of 2016. The Pittsburgh Steelers performance improved in the 2016 season. They progressed past the Wild Card Round but lost to the New England Patriots in the AFC championship. He was picked to the Pro Bowl for the fifth time and ranked 22nd in the Top 100 NFL players of 2017.

In the 2017 season, the Steelers were eliminated in the AFC Division Round by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Roethlisberger earned his sixth Pro Bowl pick and was rated 18th in the Top 100 NFL players of 2018. In 2018, the Steelers missed the playoffs to the disappointment of fans. In April 2019, Roethlisberger agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Steelers for $68 million. The contract allowed Roethlisberger to receive bonuses worth $37.5 million.
