Earl Thomas Childhood Story & Early Life

Born in Texas to Earl Thomas Jr and Debbie Thomas, much information about Thomas’ Early Life and childhood is not known. How he was introduced to football is also an obscure fact. Though it’s clear that Thomas had interest in sport, and aside football, he had interest in other sports such as athletics. In high school, Thomas went on to engage in various sports and showed how good he his in these sports.

Earl Thomas High School Career

At his high school, West Orange-Stark High School, Thomas embraced the sports which he had long had an interest in, football. During his high school career, Thomas played in various positions such as the running back, wide receiver and defensive back positions. Throughout his high school career, he had 112 tackles and 11 interceptions.

Aside from football, Thomas engaged in athletics. He was a member of his high school 4 × 200 meters relay team. The team made it to the states finals. In the Region 3-3A Meet held in 2007, Thomas who competed in the long jump event emerged second after jumping 7.14 meters. At the conclusion of his high school career, Thomas who was rated as a four star recruit by Rivals.com, was the 12th best high school football player in the country. 

Earl Thomas College Career

Following his completion of high school education, he went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin, where he spent two seasons. In his first year, Thomas was redshirted and was second in the University football team in tackles and pass breakups, with 63 tackles and 17 pass breakups, which was the highest ever recorded for a Texas Longhorns player. He was thus named to the Sporting News′ Freshman All-American team, Rivals.com’s Freshman All-America team, FWAA’s Freshman All-America team and the College Football News′ All-Freshman first team.

In his second season as a redshirted player, he led his team to a successful regular season run where they were undefeated. At the 2010 BCS National Championship Game, the Texas Longhorns lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide. At the end of the season, Thomas decided to enter the 2010 NFL Draft.

Seattle Seahawks (2010 – 2018)

After he declared that he will enter the 2010 NFL Draft, he performed at the NFL Scouting Combine where he sustained a hamstring injury. He also attended private workout sessions and pre draft visits with several NFL teams. He was thus projected to be a first round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft by pundits. In the 2010 NFL Draft, Thomas who was the youngest player eligible to be drafted at 20 years old was the second safety to be picked when he was chosen by the Seattle Seahawks as its 14th overall pick in the first round. He then went on to sign a five-year deal with the Seahawks worth $18.30 million, with $11.75 million guaranteed.

He debuted for the Seattle Seahawks in their first game of the season. Thomas’ performance in his rookie season was laudable as he led his side to finish in the first spot in the NFC West division. He then went on play in the playoffs for the first time in his career in January 2011. The Seattle Seahawks were eventually defeated by the Chicago Bears in the Divisional Round. In his second season in the NFL, he was named as a starting safety for the Seahawks for the 2011 season. In December 2011, he was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. At the end of the season, Thomas had 98 tackles and was named to the second-team All-Pro and was ranked as the 66th Top player in the Top 100 NFL player of 2012.

In the 2013 season, he was named as one of the Seahawks starting safeties. In December 2012, he was the only Seahawks player to be named to the 2013 Pro Bowl. In January 2013, he earned the 2013 All-Pro Team honor. After the Seattle Seahawks finished second in the NFC West, they made it to the playoffs where they lost to the Atlanta Falcons in the Divisional Round. The same year, Thomas was retained as one of the team’s starting safeties. In December 2013, he was named to the Pro Bowl but would be replaced as a result of his participation in the Super Bowl XLVIII.

After the Seahawks emerged first in the NFC West losing just 3 out of 16 games, they went on to defeat the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Divisional Round. At the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers, the Seahawks proved to be the better side and booked a spot for themselves in the Super Bowl XLVIII. After defeating the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl XLVIII, Thomas claimed his first Super Bowl honor.

In April 2014, Thomas signed a four-year deal with the Seahawks worth $49 million with $27.72 million guaranteed. The contract also included a signing bonus of $9.50 million. In December 2014, he was named to the Pro Bowl. After starting all 16 games of the regular season, Thomas recorded 97 tackles. After finishing top in the NFC West, and defeating the Carolina Panthers in the NFC Divisional Round, the Seattle Seahawks progressed to the NFC Championship where Thomas sustained a shoulder dislocation in a game against the Green Bay Packers. In the Super Bowl XLIX, the Seahawks lost to the New England Patriots.

After undergoing surgery for the shoulder injury he sustained at the NFC Championship, Thomas recovered quickly to emerge as one of the starting safeties for the Seahawks in the 2015 season. He was voted by fans to play in his fifth Pro Bowl, but he decided not to play so as to recover fully. After recording 64 tackles in 16 games, Thomas was ranked the 66th Top player in the Top 100 NFL Players of 2016.

Thomas had an impressive start in the 2016 season, which was blighted by injury. He however was set to be voted to play in the Pro Bowl for the sixth consecutive time but was not able to play as a result of him being placed on the Injury Reserve list. He recorded 48 tackles in 11 games and was ranked 30th in the Top 100 NFL Players of 2017. In Week 5 of the 2017 season, Thomas was named the Defensive Player of the Week in the NFC. In Week 8, he sustained a hamstring injury. He however, played in his sixth Pro Bowl.

In the Top 100 NFL Players of 2018, Thomas was ranked 48th. At the start of the 2018 season, Thomas did not report for training as a result of an issue in which he demanded for his contract to be renegotiated or for him to be traded. He however returned to the team in Week 1 of the season. After playing in fine form in the season, he suffered an injury in Week 4 in a game against the Arizona Cardinals. It was revealed he had a fractured bone in his left leg and will be out of action for the rest of the season.  

Baltimore Ravens (2019–date)

In March 2019, Thomas agreed to a four-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens worth $55 million. The deal guaranteed the sum of $32 million to be paid. In October 2019, after debuting for the Ravens he was involved in a helmet-helmet collision against Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback, Mason Rudolph, who became unconscious and had to be rushed to the hospital. In his debut season with the Baltimore Ravens, Thomas made it to the playoffs where they lost to the Tennessee Titans in the Divisional Round.
