Khalil Mack Childhood Story and Early Life

Khalil Mack is one of three children born to Sandy Mack Sr., who worked as a Program specialist and Yolanda Mack, a teacher. Khalil Mack’s parents were high school sweethearts. 

Khalil got introduced to sports by his father when he was just five years old. Young Mack took interest in basketball and baseball. Though he had an interest in these sports, Mack engaged in American football, thanks to the Pop Warner organization. By the time, Mack progressed to high school, he had progressed in American football. He played in the quarterback position, which earned him the nickname, Bombshell Man. While playing as a quarterback, Mack had troubles with throwing, which led him to switch to the linebacker position. 

Aside from football, Mack played basketball actively in high school. He planned on getting a college scholarship with his basketball antics. But his plans fell through after he injured his patella tendon. Following his injury, his high school coach brought him to the football team, which he assured Mack will help him get his college scholarship. He quickly became a force to reckon with in his team and when he was in his senior year, he led his team to win the district championship and earned third-team All-State in Florida. His performance earned him a two-star recruits rating by Rivals.com and a scholarship to the State University of New York at Buffalo.

In 2009, Mack was redshirted. In his first season at the State University of New York at Buffalo, he was named third-team all-conference. His jersey number then was #46 which he chose as a motivation. In EA Sports NCAA Football 11, he was rated 46 out of 99, which he felt was not a true representation of his potential, thus he decided to wear the #46 jersey. 

In his sophomore year, he received first-team All-MAC honour. He received for the second successive time, the first team all-conference honour in his third year in college. His final year of college football was the best in his college career as his top performance earned him the 2013 MAC Defensive Player of the Year award and the 2013 CFPA Linebacker Trophy. Associated Press listed Mack as a second-team All-American. 

Khalil Mack Professional Career

Oakland Raiders (2014–2018)

Before the 2014 NFL draft, pundits envisioned that Mack will be among the first-round high picks. Just as pundits thought, Mack was picked by the Oakland Raiders as its fifth overall pick. He thus became the highest Buffalo player selected in an NFL draft. He also became the first round one pick from Buffalo. 

In his first season with the Raiders, his rookie season, Mack had a very impressive performance, recording 76 tackles. At the end of the season, Mack finished third in the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year votings. The ESPN’s NFL Live show analysts, however, named him as Defensive Rookie of the Year. 

In the 2015 season, he contemplated changing his jersey number from #52 to #46, following a regulation by the NFL which allows linebackers to wear jersey number 40-46. Mack decided not to switch jersey number. He went on to be named NFL’s number one “making the leap” player in August 2015. In December 2015, he was named as one of the players who will play in the Pro Bowl. His 2015 season ended on a remarkable note as he was named to the AP All-Pro First Team in two positions, the outside linebacker and right defensive end positions. He was rated 13th in the 2016 Top 100 NFL players of the year. 

In the 2016 season, Mack received the NFL player of the Month honour in November. He also led his team to the playoffs, for the first time since 2002. Mack also secured his second Pro Bowl appearance and was named the 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He was rated 5th in the Top 100 NFL players of 2017 and secured the Butkus Award, awarded to the top linebacker in the NFL. The 2017 season was a disappointing one for Mack and the Oakland Raiders. He went on to earn his third successive Pro Bowl appearance and ranked 16th in the 2018 Top 100 NFL Players.

Chicago Bears (2018–Present)

In 2018, Mack was traded to the Chicago Bears, who he signed a six-year deal worth $141 million with $90 million in guaranteed payment. The deal made him the top-paid defender in the history of the NFL. He went on to have a really wonderful season. In September he received the NFC Defensive Player of the Month. He was named for the fourth time to the Pro Bowl. In 2019, Mack continued in his top consistent performance. He was thus named to the Pro Bowl in 2020 as a starter.
