Le’Veon Bell’s Childhood & Early Life

Le’Veon was born on February 18, 1992, to Lisa A Bell, his mother and his father, who is unknown. Being the third of five children, having two older sisters and two younger brothers. His brothers all play football (but not much is known about them).

Growing up without a father figure was a challenge, but he had his Grandpa, to help fill up the void. Lisa struggled to provide materially for him and his siblings. This didn’t affect their love for football, as both his Mother and Grandpa are personally fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

High School Career

Groveport Madison Highschool

When he was in high school, at Groveport Madison Highschool, Ohio, he played the running back position for his school team. Although he also played basketball and ran track events, he exhibited a flair for football. Running 1100 rushing yards, and 13 touchdowns in his Junior and 1333 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior. Earning him the No 221 running back in the nation in 2010 with ESPN considering him a two-star recruit.

His principal Donis Toeler Jnr believed he deserved a scholarship made the call to his contacts in Michigan State, and this got him noticed by the school, and was offered the scholarship into the Michigan State University.

College Career

Playing for the Michigan State Spartans team, he was awarded the All Big-Ten freshman honours from Rivals.com and ESPN.com during his first season in Michigan. In his junior year in 2012, he ran an astounding career-high of 233 yards against Eastern Michigan. He received the Big 10 Offensive player of the week award, and also the coaches, media, ESPN.com Phill Steele among others awarded him with the first-team All-Big 10 award. He was also ranked the fifth-best running back by the NFL scout.com after his junior year.

Professional Career

Pittsburgh Steelers (2013–2014)

Le’Veon was drafted as the 48th overall selection of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round signing a 4-year deal. He was paid $4.12 million which includes a signing bonus of $1.37 million and $2.7 million guaranteed as a rookie contract.

In his first season, Le’Veon exhibited all his skills and sportsmanship. He became the very first running back in his teams’ records to have seven games and 100 yards of scrimmage consecutively. In 2014, at the end of the season, he was given the 2014 Pro Bowl. He was selected by his teammates as well as fellow players as the 16th of the NFL top 100 players of 2015.

Despite all the wins Le’Veon also received the discipline of suspension from games due to possession of drugs, failing a drug test as well as Driving under the Influence DUI. In 2014 he was suspended alongside his teammate LeGarrette Blount for DUI and possession of marijuana charges.

In the 2016 regular season, he was further suspended for three games for violating the NFL’s policies for substance abuse although he apologized on Twitter.

On completing his Rookie contract, the Steelers again award him another contract worth $14.5 million in March 2018. He, however, rejected the deal, demanding to be paid more for his superb contribution to the Steelers and not what his position as a running back are paid. He further dismissed another contract worth $30 million. This lead to gridlock between his agent and the Steelers management. He, however, remains adamant to the point of refusing to turn up for practice. This made him ineligible to play in the 2018 season, but Le’Veon believes he is making a stand for his right and has refused to back down.

New York Jets (2019–date)

In March 2019, Le’Veon signed a four-year contract with the New York Jets for $53 million, with $30 million guaranteed. He is now the second-highest-paid Running Back in the NFL.

  • Le’Veon is said to keep his private life off the media.
  • He is currently in a relationship with his girlfriend, Mercedes Dollson, and they have a baby girl together who was born in January 2017. He had previously dated other women, one of which took to social media to explain their bitter break-up.
  • Le’Veon is said to love ink, as there are several tattoos on his body, including the picture of his mom hugging him after Michigan State’s significant loss in the big ten championships. He is also considered very religious, having two bible verses tattooed on him. Jer 1:5 and Jn 3:16.
  • He was given probation for 15 months, on August 2014, when the police stopped he and his then-teammate LeGarrette Blount and an unidentified woman. He’s driving license was also suspended for 60 days along with $2,400 in court fees.
  • He is active in charities, fundraisers and also worked with PETA posing for one of their advertisements with a shirt with words against animal cruelty and using them as clothes.

In March 2017, Le’Veon kicked up his musical career as a rapper with his stage-name “Juice”, he released a 7-track album (Until the Post Interview) on SoundCloud. By May 2018, he released a single called “Target” this was to explain his stance regarding the contract dispute, responding to critics among other things. This was followed by a four-song project he titled “my side of things” explaining to everyone why he rejected a second contract. He soon released another Album in March 2019 called “Life is a Gamble”.
