José Miguel Cabrera Torres (born 18 April 1983) is a baseball player of Venezuelan origin, who plays in the first baseman position for MLB team, Detroit Tigers. In his career which has spanned more than a decade, Cabrera has effectively managed the first and third baseman positions he has held. Miguel Cabrera Childhood/Early Life

Miguel Cabrera is one of two children born April 18, 1983, to his father, Miguel Cabrera, who worked as a welder and mother, Gregorian Cabrera, who was actively involved in sport and played softball in international tournaments for Venezuela. Though much information is not known about Miguel Cabrera’s childhood and how he was introduced to baseball, we do know, his parents, who later divorced and went separate ways, were a big source of encouragement for young Cabrera. Those encouragements spurred him to success.

Miguel Cabrera Minor Leagues Career

In 1999, Cabrera was signed by the Florida Marlins. He was thus enrolled in the franchise farm system. In 2000, he played in the Gulf Coast League (GCL) for the Marlins in the shortstop position. After 57 games in which he recorded two home runs and a batting average of .260, he earned a promotion to the Class-A ball where he played for the Blue Sox in the New York–Penn League (NYPL). In the winter of 2000, he played in the Venezuelan Winter League for the Tigres de Aragua, where he was moved from shortstop to third baseman position.

In the 2001 season, he played for the Kane County Cougars in the Minor League Baseball. He was chosen to play in the Future Games. The following season, he earned a promotion to the High Class-A Florida State League where he played for the Jupiter Hammerheads. At the Hammerheads, he decided he wanted to switch fully to the third baseman position. For his performance, he earned a place in the Future game during the All-star weekend. He ended the season with a batting average of .278 and nine home runs.

In his final season playing in the minor league, the 2003 season, he was promoted to the Carolina Mudcats of the Double-A minor league. In June, right before he was called to play in the Major League Baseball (MLB), Cabrera had 10 home runs and a batting average of .365.

Florida Marlins (2003–2007)

In June 2003, at the age of 20, Cabrera made his debut in the MLB. In his debut match, he became the third player since 1900 to score a home run in a debut game which secured victory for his team as well as ended the game (walk-off home run). After defeating the San Francisco Giants in the National League Division Series (NLDS), they went on to face the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series (NLCS), before progressing to the World Series. In a showdown against the New York Yankees, Cabrera helped spur his side to claim the World Series, in his debut season in the Major League.

For his performance that season, he was made the National League Rookie of the Month for July and September of the 2003 season. Following his World Series championship win, he was made the  ESPN The Magazine cover athlete. In 87 games he played for the Marlins, he recorded 12 home runs, 21 doubles and batted .268.

In the 2004 season, he played in 160 games and recorded 33 home runs and a batting average of .294. That season, he also earned his first All-Star appearance. The 2005 season was also a great season for Cabrera who earned his second successive All-star appearance. His batting average was set at .323 with 33 home runs. He led the league in hits and also became the youngest player in the MLB to secure more than 30 home runs in two successive seasons. After featuring in the World Baseball Classic, he began the 2006 season. During the season, he earned his third All-star selection and debuted in the Home Run Derby, where he placed third. In December 2007, Cabrera was traded to the Detroit Tigers. In March 2008, he signed an eight-year deal worth $152.3 million. That month, he debuted for the Tigers. He went on to receive the AL Player of the Month honour for June. He ended his first season in the America League with 37 home runs, the highest in the league. He thus became the youngest home run champion in the league since 2000. In 2009, he featured for the Venezuelan side in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, before beginning his campaign.

In the 2009 season, he played in his 1000th career game and recorded his 200th home run. At the end of the season, he had a batting average of .324, which was fourth in the league. In May 2010, he scored his first three home runs in a game. He also was named to the America League All-star game for the first time in his career. He also played in the Home Run Derby, where he emerged in fourth place with 12 home runs. In September, after he suffered an ankle injury, he was left out of action for the rest of the season. In March 2014, two years before his contract was to expire, he agreed to an eight-year contract extension with the Detroit Tigers worth $248 million. With the combined two years remaining in his previous contract, he had a 10-year deal with the Tigers worth $292 million. After being named as a starter to the All-star game for the second consecutive time, he went on to claim a second successive ESPY award. In October 2014, after he was named as a finalist for the Gold Glove award, he had to undergo a bone spur surgery. In 2015, though he was named to the All-star game, he was unable to play due to injury. He went on to win the Silver Slugger award for the sixth time in his career.

In 2016, after he was named to the All-star game, he won his seventh Silver Slugger award. In 2017, he struggled with back issues. In October, it was discovered he had two herniated discs. He played 130 games in the season and registered 16 home runs and a batting average of .249. His 2018 season was marred by injuries. He played in just 38 games and registered 3 home runs and a batting average of .299. In 2019, he struggled with knee issues and had 12 home runs and a batting average of .282 in 139 appearances.
