Andre Drummond Childhood Story & Early Life

Andre Drummond is one of two children born on August 10, 1993, to his parents in New York. Andre’s parents are Jamaicans. Little information about Andre’s childhood is known. But Andre played basketball right from an early age. When Andre and his sister relocated to Connecticut along with his mother, Andre who was just 7 years old then, attended Woodrow Wilson Middle School. It’s unclear if he played basketball there, but when he got to high school, he played basketball actively.

Andre first attended Capital Preparatory Magnet School located in Connecticut capital city, Hartford. In his first year at Capital Preparatory, he had an average of 12.7 points and 11.9 rebounds. He increased his average in his second year to 20.2 points and 16.6 rebounds. For his third year of high school basketball, he attended a private school, St. Thomas More. There he became a dominant figure in high school basketball. In 2011, he won the national prep championship, with St. Thomas More. After he graduated from high school, Drummond announced that he’ll attend, Wilbraham & Monson Academy. He later rescinded that decision and announced in a surprising move that he’ll attend the University of Connecticut. He spent just one season playing basketball for the UConn. Drummond featured in 34 games in his only season of college basketball. He averaged 10.0 points and 7.6 rebounds. He also was the highest in the UConn squad, in average rebounds and blocks. In the first round of the NCAA, the UConn lost to the Iowa State Cyclones. The game was the last game of Drummond’s college basketball career.

Detroit Pistons (2012–2020)

Drummond announced that he’ll forgo his remaining three years of college eligibility and enter the 2012 NBA Draft. He was thus picked by the Detroit Pistons in the first round as its ninth overall pick. In his first season in the NBA, Drummond had a good performance, recording an average of 7.9 points and 7.6 rebounds. He was also named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. Drummond also emerged fourth in the NBA Rookie of the Year voting. In the second season of his NBA career, Drummond was selected to play in the Rising star challenge. In the game, he had 25 rebounds and was named the Rising Star Challenge MVP. He continued in remarkable form in his third season of professional basketball.

In the 2015/16 season, Drummond became the first player in the NBA to have three successive double-doubles, since the 2004/05 season. He was then awarded the Eastern Conference Player of the Week award, making him the first Detroit Pistons player to receive the honour since 2009. In the second week of November 2015, he joined the elite ranks of Wilt Chamberlain and  Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the only NBA players to have as much as three 20/20 games in the first six games of the season. Drummond achieved the feat after he had 29 points and 27 rebounds in a game against the Portland Trail Blazers. He thus went on to receive the Eastern Conference Player of the Week award for the second week of the season. Drummond became the first player to receive the award for the first two weeks of a season since the 2012 season.

He continued in fine form and earned his first All-star game selection as an Eastern Conference reserve. He also played in the Slam Dunk contest. After a good performance in the regular season, the Pistons lost to the Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs. In July 2016, Drummond who was in a top form signed a five-year contract extension with the Pistons worth $130 million. He went on to become the second-youngest NBA player to reach 4000 rebounds. He concluded his season on an impressive note. In the 2017/18 season, Drummond reached 5000 rebounds, which made him the sixth Pistons player with the most rebounds and also the second-youngest NBA player to achieve the feat.

In January, Drummond was named to the All-star game as a replacement for the Washington Wizards player, John Wall. In March, he recorded his 20th NBA game where he scored a minimum of 20 points and 20 rebounds. He concluded the season with a rebound average of 16, making him the first player since 1997 to record such number and the second NBA player to average such in 40 years.

In the 2018/19 season, Drummond was once again in top form. In March, he received the Eastern Conference Player of the Week award, after he earned his 11th 20/20 game of the season, which was the highest in the NBA. In March 2019, Drummond also recorded for the fourth season, 1000 points, 1000 rebounds, 100 steaks and 100 blocks. In the first game of the 2019/20 season against the Indiana Pacers, he had 32 point and 23 rebounds, and he became the third player since the merger of the NBA and ABA, to record such performance in a season opener.

Cleveland Cavaliers (2020–date)

In February 2020, Drummond was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Drummond has featured in numerous tournament for the USA national basketball side at various levels. In the FIBA Americas U16 Championship held in Argentina in 2009, he led his side to claim Gold. He also repeated the feat at the FIBA World U17 Championship in Hamburg, where he led the USA side to defeat Poland to claim Gold. At the FIBA Basketball World Cup, which was held in 2014, he was a member of the USA contingent that won Gold.
