Andrew Wiggins is one of six children born to Mitchelle Wiggins and Marita Payne-Wiggins. The Wiggins’ family is one deeply ingrained in sport—Mitchelle his father was an NBA player while his mother, Marita was a field athlete in the Olympics. Andrew just like his parents was also interested in sports. When he was 9, Andrew began playing organized basketball with his peers. He later went on to join a U-10 team. His interest in basketball was further supported by his impressive height. By the time he joined the U-10 team, Andrew height was 5 feet 7 inches. At the age of 13, Andrew dunked for the first time. In high school, Andrew began playing in basketball tournaments at Vaughan Secondary School, where he spent his first two years of high school. In his second year at Vaughan, he led the school to 44 victories and 1 loss, and also won the Ontario provincial championship. In 2011, he moved to Huntington Prep, where he averaged 24.2 points and 8.5 rebounds in his junior year.

In his senior year, he averaged 23.4 points and 11.2 rebounds. Wiggins was previously rated as the number 1 high school prospect of 2014 by ESPN, but after he declared that he will reclassify in his original high school year, he was made the top prospect of 2013. In 2013, he received many awards such as the Gatorade National Player of the Year, making him the first Canadian to win the award, Naismith Prep Player of the Year and was named Mr Basketball USA. Despite offers and interests from several Universities, Wiggins chose to commit to the University of Kansas. He played just one season of college basketball and averaged 17.1 points, 5.9 rebounds. He was thus listed as one of the final 25 shortlisted for the John R. Wooden Men’s Player of the Year and the 10 semifinalists shortlisted for the Naismith College Player of the Year.

Minnesota Timberwolves (2014–2020)

After he decided to enter the 2014 NBA Draft, Wiggins was picked by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the first-round pick in the Draft, thus become the second Canadian number 1 pick in an NBA Draft. In August 2014, in a three-team trade involving the Minnesota Wolves and Philadelphia 76ers, Wiggins was traded to the Minnesota Wolves.

In October 2014, Wiggins debuted in the NBA. For the first two months of the season, he won the Western Conference Rookie of the Month award. At the All-star weekend, he also won the Rising Star Challenge MVP. In April 2015, he was announced as the winner of the Rookie of the Year award for the 2014/15 season. In the 2015/16 season, Wiggins was back in fine form. In December 2015, he had 32 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in a game against the Sacramento Kings, which made him one of the four players aged 20 or younger to have ever scored at least 30 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists in a game since the beginning of the 21st century.

In the 2016/17 season, Wiggins became the first Canadian born NBA player to ever score more than 40 points after he scored 47 points in a game against the LA Lakers. He went on to score 40+ points in the next two games, to become the second Minnesota Wolves player to score 40+ points in successive games.

In October of the 2017/18 season, he signed a five-year contract extension worth $148 million with the Minnesota Wolves. That season, he became the sixth youngest player in the NBA to record 6,000 points. In the 2018/19 season, Wiggins’ momentum reduced. He had an injury on his right quadriceps which made him inactive in a game for the second time in his career. In November 2018, in a game against the Chicago Bulls, he finished a game without scoring for the first time in his career. In January 2019, he became the second-highest franchise scorer for the Minnesota Wolves. In the 2019/20, Wiggins earned the first triple-double of his career.

Golden State Warriors (2020–date)

In February 2020, Wiggins was traded to the Golden State Warriors.

Wiggins has featured for the Canadian national basketball team at several international tournaments such as the  FIBA Under-17 World Championship held in 2010 and the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship in 2012 where they emerged as bronze winners.
