DeMar DeRozan Childhood Story & Early Life

DeMar DeRozan is the only child born on August 7, 1989, to his father Frank DeRozan, who worked as a videographer and mother Diane DeRozan, who had a job at a thermostat factory. His father played as a linebacker for the Louisiana football team.

As young as the age of 5, DeRozan had already begun playing basketball. Basketball comforted young DeRozan who had to watch his mother fight Lupus. While he was young he lost two of his uncles to the violence in Compton. Throughout his early years, he continued playing basketball.

DeMar DeRozan High School Career

DeRozan spent four years at Compton High School and played basketball all through those years. In his first year of high school basketball, DeRozan averaged 8.4 rebounds and 26.1 points. In his second year, his average point per game reduced to 22.6, while his rebound average didn’t change. In his junior year, his rebound averaged 7.8 and average points were 22.3. He concluded his high school career in style. As a senior, he won the Moore League championship for the second successive time. For his performance, he was honoured with the tourney’s MVP award. He was also included in the California All-State team. He participated in the McDonald’s All-American Slam Dunk Competition in 2008. Following his successful senior year, Rivals com rated him #3 in America, while Scouts.com ranked him #6.

DeMar DeRozan College Career

As early as November 2007, DeRozan agreed to attend the University of South California (USC). He spent just one season playing college basketball. In his first season with the Trojans, he led his side to win the Pac-10 Tournament final. For his efforts in the tournament, he was named the tournament’s MVP and was named to the First Team Pac-10 All-Freshman team. He led his side to the NCAA Championship but they lost out in the second round.

Toronto Raptors (2009–2018)

After just one year at college, he enlisted in the 2009 NBA Draft and was picked by the Toronto Raptors as its ninth overall pick. DeRozan admits that he decided to enlist in the 2009 NBA draft in order to provide enough care for his ailing mother. In June 2009, he signed his first professional contract with the Toronto Raptors.

DeRozan’s performance in his rookie season earned him a place in the Sprite Slam Dunk Competition in 2010, where he emerged runner-up. He also participated in the 2012 edition and finish third. After four seasons in the NBA, his career began to pick up in the 2013/14 season. He was picked to serve as a reserve guard for the Eastern Conference in the 2014 All-star game. In the season, he averages 4.3 rebounds, 22.7 points and 4.0 assists. He also participated in his first NBA playoffs.

DeRozan began the 2014/15 season on an impressive note but suffered a tendon injury in November 2014. He returned to action in January 2015. In March 2015, DeRozan registered a career-high in points with 42 points in a game against the Houston Rockets. The next month he was named the Player of the Month for the Eastern Conference. The Raptors made it to the playoffs but lost in the first round.

He began his 2015/16 campaign by becoming the first Raptors player since the 2009/10 season to register more than 15 points in eight consecutive games. He was also named as a reserve for the Eastern Conference in the All-star game to be held in 2016. He tied with Kyle Lowry for the Player of the Month honour for January. His performance during the post regular season, helped the Raptors make it to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time. They lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

In July 2016, DeRozan signed a five-year contract extension with the Raptors valued at $139 million. He began his 2016/17 campaign by scoring more than 30 points in his first five games of the season. In December 2016, in a game against the Golden State Warriors, he became the Raptors top scorer with 10,290 points. He was named to the 2017 All-star game but not as a reserve. He was named as a starter. The Raptors made it to the second round of the playoffs where they lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He ended his season by receiving the All-NBA Third Team honours for the first time in his career.

In the 2017/18 season, DeRozan was also in fine form. He was selected as a starter to the All-star game and ended his season by receiving the All-NBA Second Team honour.

San Antonio Spurs (2018–present)

In July 2018, DeRozan was traded to the San Antonio Spurs. He debuted for the Spurs in October 2016, and by the time he had played in 8 games for the Spurs, he became the first Spurs player since the 1978/79 season to register more than 25 points in seven of the first eight-team games. In November 2019, he became the first Spurs player since 1989 to register double figures in his first 22 games for the team.

DeMar DeRozan National Team Career

He played for the USA Basketball side in the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2014. The team won Gold in the tournament. He was in action again for the USA Basketball side at the 2016 London Rio de Janeiro Olympics, where they won Gold.
