Draymond Green Childhood and Early Life

Born in Saginaw, Michigan to Wallace Davis and Mary Barbers, Green grew up in Saginaw. After his parents divorced, Green lived with his mother, who he is very close to.

Green’s interest in basketball began after his high school coach noticed his potentials in the game. After his interaction with his coach, Green began training and playing basketball actively. Green’s love for basketball as a child was so strong that he continued playing despite him being bullied. His mother recalls in an interview that on several occasion when he wanted to play, the bigger boys will come into the court, but a determined Green will grab the ball and sit on the court preventing them from playing. The bigger boys would place him in a trash can or on the rim. But this didn’t discourage him from pursuing his dream. Green has a stepfather named Raymond Green and 5 siblings.

Draymond Green Basketball Career

High School Career

At Saginaw High School, Green plays under the guidance of coach Lou Dawkins. In his second year at Saginaw, he led his team to a Class A State Championship with a record of 26-1. In his senior year, he led Saginaw to a 27-1 record averaging 20 points, 13 rebounds. The 27-1 record he led Saginaw to was rated no. 4 by the USA today. He further led Saginaw to a second consecutive Class A Championship.

His impressive performance earned him captain honours in the Detroit Free Press All-State Dream Team. Green was further ranked no. 36 in the ESPN 150.

College Career

Green signed Michigan State in 2007. In his first year at Michigan State, Green featured in 37 games. His averages per game was a little low recording 3.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game but he improved it in the 2009 NCAA championship to 8.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

His second year at Michigan State saw him improve in his gameplay which made him the first Michigan State Player to unanimously earn Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year honour in the 2010/11 season. He was also named to the third-team All-Big Ten and received the MSU’s Most Improved Player award. He repeated his third-team All-Big Ten honour in his junior year.

In his senior year, he captained his side to the 2011/12 Big Ten tournament and Big Ten championship. He led his team to their 13th championship title earning Big Ten Men’s Basketball Player of the week four times that season. In March 2012, Green received Big Ten Player of the Year award and was unanimously named to the All-Big Ten selection. He finished his time at Michigan State, scoring more than 1000 points and 1000 assists, becoming one of the three players to achieve the feat.

Professional Career

Golden State Warriors (2012–present)

Green entered the 2012 NBA draft where he was chosen as the Golden State Warriors 35th overall pick. In June 2012, he signed a three-year contract with the Warriors worth $2.6 million. In his debut for the Warrior in the 2012/13 season, Green played for one minute against the Phoenix Sun, registering one rebound and foul. In further games, Green played for more time.

In 2013 offseason prior to the 2013/14 regular season, Green lost about 20 pounds of weight. Green was fined $15,000 that season for refusing to leave the court quickly after he was ejected from the game due to a violent personal foul on Los Angeles Clippers Blake Griffin.

In 2013/14, Green featured in 82 games for the Warriors.

In the 2014/15 season, Green became a regular in the starting lineup after The warriors went down on a two-game losing streak, which they rose from with a 16 game winning streak with Green registering an average of 13.6 points. Green continued in a wonderful form which saw him finish up as the runner-up in the Defensive Player of the Year award and Most Improved Player of the Year. Green finished the season with an NBA championship, his first with the Warriors, registering a triple-double in Game 6 of the finals.

In July 2015, Green signed a 5-year contract extension with the Golden State Warriors worth about $82 million. Green was among the players instrumental in the Golden State Warriors record 10-0 start in the 2015/16 season. Green’s impressive form that season earned a placed in the Western Conference All-Star reserve for the 2016 NBA All-Star Game, which happens to be his first All-Star selection. On March 30, 2015, Green became the first player in the NBA to register 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 500 assists, 100 steals and 100 blocks in one season. He also received All-NBA second team honours and further emerged runner-up in the Defensive Player of the Year award but was named to the All-Defensive Team. The Warriors progressed to the NBA finals but lost to Cleveland Cavaliers.

After helping the Warriors begin their 2016/17 campaign on a 14-2 note, Green was out of action for a game as a result of an injury in his left ankle. Green was also enlisted to the Western Conference All-Star reserve for the 2017 NBA All-Star Game. Golden State Warriors progressed to the third consecutive NBA finals, where they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers to emerge NBA champions. Green was thus named Defensive Player of the Year for his efforts. He became the first Warrior Player to achieve the feat.

The 2017/18 season was one that was successful for both Green and the Warriors’ as they triumphed over the Cleveland Cavaliers to claim another NBA title, the second in two consecutive years.

The Golden State Warriors continued in their successful trajectory by advancing to the 2018/19 NBA finals where they locked horns with the Toronto Raptors. The Warriors were, however, defeated by the Toronto Raptors.

National Team Career

Green has played for the US men’s basketball team in several tournaments. He played at the 2011 Summer Universiade Men Basketball tournament where they emerged fifth. He also was part of the US team at the 2016 Rio De Janeiro summer Olympics where they won gold.

  • Green has a son with his ex-girlfriend, Jelissa Hardy.
  • He has an adopted daughter, Kyla Green, Hardy’s daughter from a previous relationship.
  • He is currently dating actress Hazel Renee.
  • Green is known for his generosity. In 2015, he made a $3.1 million donation to his alma mater Michigan State University. His donation was the largest ever made by an active athlete to his alma mater.
  • Green was involved in a feud with teammate Kevin Durant when Green failed to pass the ball to Durant in the final moments of a game against the LA clippers which the Warriors lost. Following Green’s action, there was an altercation between both players in the locker room, the altercation was described as one of the ‘most intense’ of the warrior’s era. Green was suspended for his actions.
  • Green was also involved in a brief altercation with Canadian rapper and Toronto Raptors fan Drake in the warrior Game 1 loss to the Raptors in the 2018/19 NBA finals.
