Gordon Hayward Childhood Story and Early Life

Hayward was born in Indianapolis, the capital of Indiana, to Gordon Hayward Sr. and Jody Hayward. Right from a young age, even before he could write, Hayward, had the dream of becoming an NBA basketball player. Young Hayward was further blessed with the height as both his parents stood up to 5 feet 10 inches. Hayward and his father trained regularly in order to build his shooting, guarding, and ball manoeuvring skills.

Hayward knew that in order to progress in the sport, he had to grow really tall. Before high school, young Hayward who had not yet met his desired height for a bright future in basketball began playing tennis. He and his twin sister played tennis together as a mixed doubles partner. Young Hayward considered dropping his dream of becoming a basketball player, in order to focus on his tennis career, but his mother prevented him from making what may eventually have been a big mistake. 

Gordon Hayward High School Career

When Hayward began attending high school when he was just 5 feet 11 inches, but by the time, he was a senior, he had grown to 6 feet 8 inches. In his senior year, thanks to the height, Hayward had his big break in his high school career. He led his high school, Brownsburg High School, to the Class 4A state championship glory in Indiana. Hayward performance in the game was incredible and thus he was selected to the First-team all-state team. He was further honoured by being named the Indianapolis Star Player of the Year.

Gordon Hayward College Career

After he was rated as a three-star prospect by rivals.com, Hayward accepted a scholarship to study at Butler University. In 2008/09 he began his college career, and he made his mark by reaching an average of 13.1 points in his first year in college. He was thus named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team and to the All-Horizon League First Team. Hayward was also awarded the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year award. The team went on to claim the Horizon league but lost the Horizon League Men’s Basketball Tournament in 2009.

In the 2009/10 season, Hayward had a good season. He led the Butler Bulldogs to claim the Horizon League and the Horizon League Men’s Basketball Tournament. He went on to receive  AP All-American Honorable Mention. Hayward won the Horizon League Player of the Year award. He represented the Butler Bulldog in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament finals but lost to the Duke University Blue Devils.

Gordon Hayward Professional/NBA Career

Utah Jazz (2010–2017) 

Following a successful season at the 2010 NCAA tournament, Hayward decided to leave college and enlisted in the 2010 NBA draft. He was thus selected as the Utah Jazz ninth overall pick. In April 2011, he came off the bench to help the Utah Jazz defeat the LA Lakers. That month, he rounded up his rookie season by scoring 34 points in a game against the Denver Nuggets.

The next season, the 2011/12 season, Hayward began starting for the Utah Jazz. He was selected to play in the NBA Rising Stars Challenge in 2012. He ended his sophomore year in the NBA by emerging third in the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award voting. After Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap, left the Utah Jazz, Hayward had more playing time and was the team’s main offensive player. He thus had career-high in points, rebounds, steals and assists per game. After a successful 2013/14 season, Hayward became a restricted free agent, and received a four-year contract worth $63 million, from the Charlotte Hornets. In July 2014, the Utah Jazz re-signed Hayward after matching the Hornets offer.

Through the 2014/15 season, Hayward reached career-high in points per game. In the 2015/16 season, he repeated the feat. After suffering a left-hand fracture, Hayward debuted in the 2016/17 season for the Utah Jazz in November 2016. Hayward continued in top form, increasing the average points he earned per game, for the sixth successive season. In January 2017, Hayward was picked to play in the All-star game. In March 2017, Hayward increased the points he has ever recorded in an NBA game to 38. The next months, he further increased it to 39. The Utah Jazz made it to the playoffs and defeated the LA Clippers before succumbing to the Golden State Warriors. 

Boston Celtics (2017–present)

In July 2017, Hayward penned a four-year contract with the Boston Celtics valued at $128 million. After making his debut for the Boston Celtics, Hayward had a very serious injury in October 2017. In a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Hayward’s left leg caved into the weight of his body after he made the attempt to make an alley-opp pass to Kyle Irving. He was thus left with a dislocated ankle and broken tibia. Hayward had surgery and was ruled out of action for the remainder of the season. In March 2018, a recuperating Hayward had to undergo another surgery.

He returned to action in October 2018 against the Philadelphia 76ers. In just 25 minutes of play, he had registered 10 points and 5 rebounds. He continued to play well through the season. In November 2019, he came down with a left-hand fracture. He returned to action in December 2019. 

Gordon Hayward National Team Career

Hayward played for the first time for the USA National basketball team in 2009 at the 2009 FIBA Under-19 World Championship, which the team won. For his performance in the tournament, he was selected to the All-Tournament Team. He also played for the USA Basketball Select Team, that played against the 2012  Olympics USA team. In 2016, he was among the finalist considered to be part of the Olympics team but withdrew as a result of family obligations.

Hayward has a twin sister named, Heather. She was a tennis player for Butler University.
