Born on 13 June 1989, Hassan Niam Whiteside is one of 7 children who was raised by his mother, Debbie Whiteside, a single mother. Hassan had a rough childhood as his mother solely catered to the needs of 7 children. He, however, took interest in sport, which served as a way of dealing with the challenges of his childhood.

When he got to high school, Hassan’s interest in basketball increased as he began playing in tournaments. In his junior year in high school, he stayed with his father in New Jersey where he attended East Side High School, where he played basketball. He returned to North Carolina afterwards and attended Hope Christian Academy before moving on to The Patterson School in 2008/09. At Patterson, Whiteside played prepped basketball and led his school to 34 victories in 36 games, which made them number 1 in the country. Despite offers from the University of South Carolina, Auburn University, University of Kentucky and Mississippi State University, Whiteside chose to attend Marshall University. When he began playing in the 2009/10 season, Whiteside was relatively unknown, but by December, he had already been thrust into the national spotlight.
In the December 2009 edition of ESPN The Magazine’s College Basketball column, Whiteside was featured. He had three triple-doubles in the season and by the end of the season, he topped the blocked shots charts with 182 blocked shots, which broke the record for most blocked shots in a season in the Conference USA. Sacramento Kings (2010–2012)
In the 2010 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings picked Whiteside as it’s 33rd overall pick. In his rookie season, he featured in just the season-opening game for the kings. Whiteside then went on to play for the Reno Bighorn in the NBA G League from November 2010 to January 2011. He came down with an injury, which saw him out of action for about 6 months. In the 2011/12 lockout season, Whiteside continued playing for the Reno Bighorns but featured in just 18 games for the Sacramento Kings. In July 2012, the Sacramento Kings waived Whiteside’s contract.
D-League, Lebanon and China (2012–2014)
In December 2012, NBA Development League team, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, signed Whiteside. By January 2013, he moved to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Before the League began, he moved again to Amchit Club, a Lebanese club. After playing just three games for Amchit, Whiteside moved on to Chinese basketball club, the Sichuan Blue Whales. In 27 games played for the Blue Whales, Whiteside had an average of 25.7 points and 16.6 rebounds. In November 2014, Whiteside was on the move again, back to Lebanon, where he played for Al Mouttahed Tripoli. By April 2014, he returned to China, where he played for Jiangsu Tongxi.
Following his time at Jiangsu Tongxi, he went on to play for NBA team, Toronto Raptors in the Summer League and spent the pre-season with the Memphis Grizzlies. In November 2014, he joined Development League team, Iowa Energy, but was soon called up by the Memphis Grizzlies after most of their squad went down with an injury. Miami Heat (2014–2019)
In November 2014, the Miami Heat signed Whiteside. He was sent to play for the Sioux Falls Skyforce but was called back two days later. In January 2015, he recorded his first NBA double-double. He then went on to record his first triple-double in January. In a game against the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2016/17 season, White recorded 30 points and 27 rebounds in 27 minutes, making him the second player to have ever done so in the NBA. In the 2018/19 season, Whiteside was in good form, he had already amassed 8 blocked shots in the first half of the season, the highest for a Miami Heats player. He came down with a hip injury which once again impeded his game as he was given the reserve role.
Portland Trail Blazers (2019–date)
In July 2019, in a four-team trade, involving the Miami Heats, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Clippers and the Philadelphia 76ers, Whiteside was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.
