Butler was born in Houston, Texas. At a tender age, Butler was abandoned by his father, leaving him in the care of his mother. He lived with his mother in Tomball, a suburb of Houston, until he was 13 years old when his mother kicked him out of the house.

In his senior year at Tomball High School, he befriended future NFL football player Jordan Leslie, who challenged him to a three-point-contest. Butler was homeless when he met Leslie, whose mother Michelle Lambert accepted to stay with them despite already having six children. Despite his parents’ misdeed, Butler admits he still talks to and loves them.

High School Career

Butler was voted by his Tomball peers, as Tomball most valuable player. After high school, Butler was not considered as a notable recruit, he went on to attend Tyler Junior College.

College Career

Butler put up a good performance in his first year at Tyler Junior College, which generated interest from Division I teams. He was ranked the 127th junior college prospect in 2008 while being regarded as a two-star recruit by 247sports. Butler was then offered a scholarship by Marquette University which he accepted. He continued in good form at Marquette, which saw him promoted to the starting lineup in his junior season. In his junior season, Butler also received an All-Big East Honorable Mention. The next season, he participated in the NCAA tournament for the 5th successive time, he also received an All-Big East Honorable Mention for the second successive time.

Professional Career

Chicago Bulls (2011–2017)

Following his time at Marquette University, Butler entered the 2011 NBA draft where he was selected by the Chicago Bulls as its 30th overall pick. In his rookie season, which happened to be the 2011/12 lockout season, Butler saw little play time, featuring in just 42 games. The next season, Butler saw significant play time during the second half of the season featuring in 82 games while featuring in the starting squad in all the playoff games.

The number of game Butler played in the 2013/14 season further reduced as a result of an injury. He played in just 67 games where he managed to top the league with 38.7 minutes per games. Butler received the NBA All-Defensive Second Team honours at the end of the season.

In the 2014/15 season, Butler was named Eastern Conference Player of the Month for the months of October and November. In January 2015, Butler was selected as a reserve for the Eastern Conference side in the 2015 NBA All-Star Game. In March 2015, Butler was out of action for weeks after he sustained an injury in his left elbow. Chicago Bulls advanced to the playoffs semi-final that season but were eliminated by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Butler was awarded the NBA Most Improved Player award at the end of the season, becoming the first Chicago Bulls Player to achieve the feat. In July 2015, Butler signed a 5-year contract with the Chicago Bulls worth $95 million which allowed a player option in the fifth year.

On January 3rd 2016, in a game against the Toronto Raptors, Butler broke ace Basketball legend Micheal Jordan record for points recorded in a half, after he registered about 40 points to lead the Chicago Bulls to an inspiring win. He continued in his impressive form until he sustained a left knee strain in a game again at the Denver Nuggets. The injury ruled Butler out of action for four weeks.

The injury prevented Butler from participating in the 2016 NBA All-Star Game. After missing 11 games, Butler was back in action on March 5 but had to stay on the sidelines on March 7 as a result of his left knee swelling and back sores. Butler recovered in time to face the Toronto Raptors on March 14.

In the 2017/18 season, Butler was in good form as always. He earned Eastern Conference Player of the Week on January 8. Butler secured a place in the starting squad on the Eastern Conference All-Star team scheduled to play at the 2017 NBA All-Star Game. Butler, however, was filed and placed on the sidelines after he questioned the desires of the Chicago Bulls younger Players.

Minnesota Timberwolves (2017–2018)

In June 2017, Butler was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In his debut for the Wolves, he put forth a good performance registering 12 points in a game against the San Antonio Spurs. He continued in his good form, which earned him a placed in the Western Conference All-Star Reserve.

Towards the end of the 2017/18 season, Butler made it known he had no plan of resigning with the Timberwolves in the 2019 offseason, by requesting a trade-off. When a trade-off couldn’t be met, he resolved to play for the Minnesota Timberwolves the next season.

Philadelphia 76ers (2018–present)

In November 2018, Butler was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. In his debut game, he registered 14 points. Butler has since continued in his great form helping the Sixers to the playoff where they lost to the Toronto Raptors.
