Mike Conley Jr. Childhood Story & Early Life

Mike Conley Jr., is one of four children born to his father, Mike Conley Sr, a former Olympics triple jumper who won Gold and Silver medals, and mother, Regina Conley. Not much is known about Conley’s early life. It was no challenge for Conley to venture into sports because his father was an athlete. He eventually embraced basketball and continued playing until he got to high school, where he began to garner attention from the media.

Mike Conley Jr. High School Career & Highlights

Conley played basketball for his high school basketball team, Lawrence North High School. Throughout his high school basketball career, where he played as a starting point guard, which spanned four years, Conley led his team to victory on 103 occasions and saw defeat just 7 times. He also led his team to win the Indiana basketball state championship on three successive occasions.

In his final season of high school basketball, he recorded 123 assists and emerged second in the Indiana Mr Basketball voting. He was also named to the McDonald’s All American Team. Rivals.com rated him as a five-star recruit. He was also ranked as the 5th point guard in the high school class of 2006. He was rated in the 18th position, in the top high school players of 2006. After his senior year in high school, he went on to Ohio State University.

Mike Conley Jr. College Career & Highlights

Conley spent just one year in college. He led his team to win the Big Ten conference championship and the NCAA Championship finals where they lost to the Florida Gators. At the conclusion of his freshman season, Conley recorded 441 points and 238 assists. He ended his season by being named to the All-Big Ten First Team. He decided to forego his remaining three years in college and enlisted in the 2007 NBA Draft.

Memphis Grizzlies (2007–2019)

In the 2007 NBA Draft, Conley was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies as its fourth overall pick. He made his first professional major appearance in 2008. After a slow start in his rookie year, he finished the season, averaging, 9.4 points and 4.2 assists. In his second season in the NBA, he competed with  Kyle Lowry for playing time. Following the arrival of a new coach at Memphis Grizzlies, Kyle Lowry was traded to the Houston rockets, and thus he had more playing time. He soon became a regular starter for the Grizzlies and ended his sophomore season with an average of 12.0 points and 5.3 assists.

In the 2010/11 season, the Grizzlies performance improved. They made it to the playoffs for the first time in five years. After series of wins, their NBA championship dream came to an end after seven games lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the semifinals.

The 2011/12 was a short season as a result of the lockout which spanned from the expiration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) of 2005. As a result of the lockout, the Memphis Grizzlies played just 66 games, and Conley featured in 62 of such games. At the end of the season, Conley’s average was 12.7 points and 6.5 assists.

In the 2012/13 season, Conley’s performance increased notably. He led the Grizzlies to the Western Conference finals for the first time in the history of the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies eventually lost to the San Antonio Spurs. Conley averaged 14.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 6.1 assists in the season. He further received NBA All-Defensive Second Team honour for the first time in his career.

In the 2013/14 season, he maintained his top form. He led the Memphis Grizzlies to the playoffs but lost in the first round. He was awarded the NBA Sportsmanship Award for the 2013/14 season. In the 2014/15 season, he led the Grizzlies to the semifinals of the playoffs against the Golden State Warriors. The Grizzlies eventually lost to the Warriors. The 2015/16 season was marred by injury for Conley. In October 2015, Conley became the Grizzlies third all-time leading scorer.

In March 2016, he had an injury in his left foot, which ruled him out of the playoffs. The Memphis Grizzlies without key players, Mike Conley and Marc Gasol lost in the first round to the San Antonio Spurs. Conley received the NBA Sportsmanship Award for the second time in the 2015/16 season. In July 2016, Conley signed what was then the greatest contract in the NBA, in terms of the total value. He signed a five-year deal with the Memphis Grizzlies worth $153 million. After coming down with a vertebrae fracture in November 2016, Conley returned to action in December 2016, to become the Grizzlies all-time top scorer.

In February 2017, he became the Grizzlies player with the highest three-pointers. In the 2017/18 season, Conley played in just 12 games for the Grizzlies as a result of injury in his left Achilles. In January 2018, it was revealed Conley will be out of action for the remainder of the season. In October 2018, he returned to action for the Grizzlies. Throughout the season, Conley continued in fine form. In March 2019, he became the Memphis Grizzlies all-time leading player in career points.

Utah Jazz (2019–present)

In July 2019, Mike Conley was traded to the Utah Jazz.
