Paul Millsap Childhood Story & Early Life

Paul Millsap was born on February 10, 1985, to his mother Bettye Millsap. Millsap is the second of four boys raised by Bettye Millsap in Louisiana. The details of his childhood are not much publicised. The role of his father in his childhood is not widely known and how he was introduced to sport is unclear.

At Grambling High School, Millsap was a regular in the team’s basketball squad. Though details of his high school career are not made public, it’s unclear if Millsap won any major championship during the duration of his high school career. At the end of his senior year in his high school career, Millsap who was named to the Parade All-American fourth team was crowned Louisiana Mr Basketball. In the high school basketball players of 2003, Millsap ranked as the 115th player in the country and the 31st power forward.

Paul Millsap College Career

After graduating from high school, Millsap went on to attend Louisiana Tech University where he spent three years. At Louisiana Tech, Millsap regularly played for the team. In the three seasons he spent at Louisiana Tech, he played in 92 games. In those games, Millsap recorded 12.7 rebounds, 18.6 points and 2.0 rebounds.

Throughout the three years he spent at college, Millsap emerged as the top player in the NCAA rebounds chart. He thus became the only player in the NCAA to achieve the feat. In his sophomore and junior year, he was honoured by being named to the All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) conference. He decided to forfeit his remaining one year in college in 2006 and made the decision to enlist in the NBA draft that same year. 

Paul Millsap Professional/NBA Career

Utah Jazz (2006–2013)

In the 2006 NBA Draft, Millsap was picked by the Utah Jazz as its 46th overall pick. In August 2006, he penned his rookie contract with the Utah Jazz. In the 2006/07, Millsap’s performance made him a favourite for the NBA Rookie of the Year award. The award which is mostly contended by top picks in the NBA draft was won by Brandon Roy. Millsap, however, ended his rookie season by claiming six double-doubles, the highest for a rookie that season. That season, he averaged 7 points and 5 rebounds in 82 games. 

In the 2007/08 season, he registered a career-high of points of 28 in December 2007. The next season his career-high shot up to 32. After playing in 196 successive games for the Utah Jazz, a ligament injury ruled him out of action in December 2008. In the 2008/09 season, he averaged 10.3 rebounds and 15.9 points.

In July 2009, he agreed to a four-year deal with the Portland Trail Blazers worth $32 million. That month, the Utah Jazz matched the offer. In the 2010/11 season, he became the Utah Jazz permanent power forward, and thus his career-high shot up to 46 points in November 2010.

Atlanta Hawks (2013–2017)

In July 2013, Millsap penned a two-year contract with the Atlanta Hawks. In January 2014, he was named as a reserve to the Eastern Conference All-Star team. In March 2014, he recorded the first triple-double of his career in a game against the Toronto Raptors.

In January of the 2014/15 season, he was named as a reserve for the Eastern Conference in the NBA All-star game. That season, the Atlanta Hawks made it to the Eastern Conference finals but lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers. In July 2015, he agreed to a three-year deal with the Atlanta Hawks worth $59 million.

In January 2016, in a game against the Brooklyn Nets, he passed 10,000 career points. That month, he was named as a reserve for the Eastern Conference in the NBA All-star game. The Atlanta Hawks tried as much as they could to make it to the Eastern Conference finals but were defeated in the semifinals by the Cleveland Cavaliers. In January 2017, he was named to the NBA All-star game as a reserve for the Eastern Conference.

Denver Nuggets (2017–date)

In July 2017, Millsap agreed to a three-year contract with the Denver Nuggets worth $90 million. He debuted for the Nuggets in October 2017. By November 2017, Millsap sustained an injury in his left wrist. He thus had to undergo surgery, which ruled him out of action, for months.

He returned to action in February 2018. In December 2018, he was named Western Conference Player of the Week, making him the 18th Nuggets player to achieve the feat. After suffering a toe injury in December 2018, he returned to action in February 2019.
