Victor Oladipo Childhood & Early Life

Born in Silver Spring to Christopher Oladipo, from Siera Leone, a known public health executive in Maryland and Joan Oladipo a Nigerian immigrant nurse, Oladipo was raised in Upper Marlboro, also in Maryland. Victor has 3 sisters, his two elder sisters, Kristine and Kendra as well as his twin sister Victoria. His sister Kendra, is deaf. She became deaf when she was in second grade.

Oladipo played in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) basketball at St. Jerome Academy before proceeding to DeMatha High School.

High School Career

In his senior year at DeMatha, Oladipo helped DeMatha to Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and City championships, he then received the 2010 Washington Post, 2010 All-Met First Team and First Team All-WCAC honours. Rivals.com rated him no. 144 overall and no. 41 shooting guard, while scouts.com ranked him 39 and ESPN rated him no. 59.

College Career

After turning down offers from the University of Notre Dame and Xavier University, Oladipo went on to play basketball for Indiana University where he studied sports communication broadcasting. Oladipo referred to Indiana as a basketball city following his commitment to Indiana University.

In his first year at Indiana University, Oladipo had a good season, though he didn’t claim any major honours, the 2011/12 season his sophomore season was better as he led his team to the NCAA championship, where they lost out in the sweet sixteen. Oladipo rose to national acclaim in his junior year, claiming the Big Ten championships for the Indiana Hoosiers. Eamonn Brennan of ESPN referred to Oladipo as a ‘bonafide collegiate star’. That season, Oladipo received the Sporting News Men’s College Basketball Player of the Year and the National Co-Defensive Player of the Year awards. He also received the first team All-American honours by Sporting News and United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). Oladipo enlisted for the 2013 NBA draft, forgoing his remaining years at college.

Professional Career

Orlando Magic (2013–2016)

Oladipo was projected to be a top-14 pick by ESPN and CBS Sports. He was however picked by the Orlando Magic as its second overall pick. Oladipo went on to sign his rookie contract with the Orlando Magic on July 8, 2013.

The 2013 NBA Rookie class voted Oladipo as the best defender, co-favourite for 2013/14 Rookie of the year, co-favourite to have the best career and second most athletic. Oladipo registered his first triple-double of his career on December 3, 2014, in shame against the Philadelphia 76ers with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. In that same game, Micheal Carter-Williams a rookie with the 76ers registered his first triple-double. Both players made a record as the first rookies to registered their first triple-doubles in the same game, the first and only time the feat has been recorded in the NBA.

Oladipo went on to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge and the Tack Bells Skills Challenge. Oladipo came second in the Rookie of the year voting. In October of the 2014/15 season, Oladipo was ruled out of play indefinitely as a result of a fracture he sustained in his face. The Orlando Magic went on to extend Oladipo’s contract till the 2015/16 season. Oladipo resumed play on November 24, but not without a facial protection mask. He participated in the 2015 NBA All-stars weekend, he competed in the Rising Stars Challenge and the Slam Dunk contest where he emerged second. His contract was further extended till the 2016/17 season in October 2015.

In the 2015/16 season, Oladipo registered his second career triple-double. He also suffered a concussion which saw him out of action for the final 3 games of the 2015/16 season.

Oklahoma City Thunder (2016–2017)

In January 2016, Oladipo was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He went on to sign a four-year contract extension worth $84 million with the Oklahoma City Thunders on October 31.

Indiana Pacers (2017–date)

In July 2017, Oladipo was traded to the Indiana Pacers. At his new side, Oladipo went on to put on a wonderful performance which earned him Eastern Conference Player of the week honour in October. In December, he achieved the feat again. In January 2018, Oladipo was named an Eastern Conference All-Star reserve. The Pavers progressed to the playoffs where they lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Oladipo was named the NBA Most Improved Player In the 2017/18 season.

The 2018/19 season proved to be one filled with injuries woes for Oladipo suffering a right knee injury in November and a ruptured tendon in January. Despite his injuries, Oladipo was named an Eastern Conference All-Star reserve.

  • Oladipo has kept his personal life from tabloids, but it is rumoured that he is dating actress Bria Myles.
  • Oladipo’s mom recounted a dream she had when she was pregnant with Oladipo and his twin sister, Victoria. She said she dreamt she received an autograph from basketball Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon. She said, after the dream, she realizes one of her kids would progress to basketball stardom.
