Anthony Jordan Martial (born December 5, 1995) is a French footballer who plays in the Premier League for Manchester United. Anthony Martial Childhood Story, Family Background & Early Life

Anthony Jordan Martial is the last of three boys born on 5 December 1995 to his parents, Joran Martial (father) and Audrey Martial (mother) who are immigrants from the Caribbean island of Guadalupe. As soon as his parents immigrated to France they sought to make ends meet for their children who were born in the country. As they looked for ways to escape poverty, they turned to football and encouraged their children to engage in it.

The Martials were close friends to the family of former French footballer, Thierry Henry. Their friendship was widely influenced by the fact that both families came from the Caribbean island of Guadalupe. After making enquiries as to how their sons can be involved in football, Young Martial and his brothers began playing football. For Martial, Thierry Henry was a mentor to him. He thus followed the steps of his mentor and went on to attend the same football academy from which Henry began his illustrious career, CO Les Ulis.

Academy/Junior Cub Career

CO Les Ulis (2001–2009)

In 2001, young Martial joined CO Les Ulis, where he bred his football skills. At CO Les Ulis, his performance was convincing enough that after 8 years at the academy, Ligue 1 club, Olympique Lyonnais, signed him.

Lyon (2009–2012)

At Lyon, he played for the youth team. In his second year, he had an amazing performance for Lyon’s U-17 side, scoring 32 times in 21 matches. This did a lot for his career as he was noticed by the French National U-17 team and was granted his senior debut in a Europa League game against Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona, in December 2012. Two months later, he debuted in the Ligue 1.

Senior Club Career

AS Monaco (2013–2015)

In June 2013, Ligue 1 club, AS Monaco signed Martial on a three-year contract worth about €5 million, with bonuses included. He debuted for Monaco in the Ligue 1 in November same year. About a week later, he scored his first goal in a league game against Rennes. The following month, a sprained ankle kept him out of action. For his impressive debut performance, his contract was extended to June 2018.

Martial began his second season at Monaco by scoring in a 1-1 draw against PSG in October. By the end of the season, Martial who had appeared in 36 Ligue 1 games had 9 goals. He further went on to sign another 1-year extension on his contract. 

Manchester United (2015–present)

In September 2015, Martial signed a four-year deal with Manchester United worth about £36 million, which could rise to £58 million, depending on him winning the Ballin d’Or or making 25 appearances for the French National team within those 4 years. His contract was the highest United has ever paid for a teenager. In his debut against Liverpool in September 2015, he registered his first goal for the club. In his first EPL start, he scored twice against Southampton. In the third round of the League Cup, he recorded his fourth goal in four games, which earned him praise from United former manager, Alex Ferguson.

For his amazing performance in September, he was awarded the PFA Fan’s Player of the Month, Goal of the Month and EPL Player of the Month awards. He was the third-youngest player in United history to claim the EPL Player of the Month award. In October 2015, he received the Golden boy award. Martial ended his debut season on an incredible note, as United’s top scorer in the league in all competitions

Following the arrival of José Mourinho, Martial was placed on the starting line-up, but as the season continued he had several unimpressive performances due to troubles in his personal life which made him lose his place in the teams starting lineup. But he soon returned to the starting line-up. He helped United book a spot in the 2017 EFL semi-final after he scored 2 goals. In the final of the EFL, he featured in the starting line-up and helped his side win the tournament. He was also in the starting line-up as United won the 2017 Europa League which was his first European trophy

In the 2017/18 season, Martial who was on the bench scored quite well as he earned more playing time. But following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez, he saw less playtime and was not able to score which led to speculations that he’ll leave United. In the 2018/19 season, Martial who was determined to improve his goal-scoring abilities, was fiery as he was one of seven United players who scored in five successive league games for Manchester United.  He continued in top form and as a reward for his performance, in January 2019, he signed a five-year deal with Manchester United.

Martial began his 2019/20 campaign by scoring his first goal in the league in a 4-nil victory over Chelsea.

Anthony Martial International Career

Martial featured for the French U-17 side in the 2012 UEFA European Under-17 Championship Qualifiers as well as the tournament. He also played for France in the 2013 U-19 European Championship. In August 2015, he was invited to play for the French senior team in a friendly game against Portugal and Serbia and debuted in September against Portugal. He was named to the final 23-man squad at the Euros 2016, where France emerged runner-up. In the 2018 FIFA World Cup, he was left out of the final 23-man squad.

Martial was once married to his ex-wife Samantha Helena Jacquelinet who he met when he was a teenager. The couple divorced following Martial’s extramarital affair with X-Factor contestant Emily Wademan. Samantha is the mother of Martial’s first child Peyton Martial (daughter). The fallout between him and Samantha over their divorce affected his game, and with the help of former United manager, José Mourinho and his parents, he was able to overcome it.
