Bryce Harper was born on 16 October 1992 to his mother, Sheri Harper and father, Ron Harper, in Las Vegas where he was raised. Harper had been fascinated by sports from a young age. Though it’s unclear who introduced him to baseball, he was a kid who possessed great prospects.

Throughout high school, he played baseball and succeeded in it. One moment that potentially heralded his presence in the world of sport was the May 2009 edition of Sports Illustrated where he was placed on the cover and likened to basketball star, LeBron James. After graduation from high school, Harper proceeded to the College of Southern Nevada, where he continued to play baseball in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

In college, Harper’s talent made him stand out. He broke his college’s record for the most home runs after recording 31 home runs. This feat led him to be awarded the SWAC Player of the Year. His college career came to an abrupt end after he was suspended following a two-match ejection. His suspension cost his team heavily as they lost out of the National Junior College World Series tournament. Harper’s effort during the tournament earned him the Golden Spikes Award, given to the best amateur player.

Washinton Nationals (2012–2018)

Harper who just graduated from high school was the Washington Nationals first overall pick in the 2010 MLB draft. Harper and the Nationals agreed to a five-year deal worth $9.9 million. The deal included college tuition for eight semesters and bonus valued at $6.25 million. Following his signing, Harper played in various minor leagues, such as the Arizona Fall League where he played for the Scottsdale Scorpions taxi-squad. Harper’s .343 bat was instrumental to the Scottsdale Scorpions AFL championship win.

In 2011, he played for the Hagerstown Suns in the Class-A South Atlantic League. Harper’s performance in the league was not as he envisioned and thus he visited an optometrist who gave him contact lens. In his first game with the lens, he recorded 7 home runs. Harper was selected to play in the All-Star Futures Game for the United States in 2011. In 2011, Harper secured promotion to the Class AA Eastern League where he played for the Harrisburg Senators. His 2011 season came to an end after he sustained a hamstring injury.

His 2012 season began with the Syracuse Chiefs in the Class AAA International League. He was promoted to the MLB in April 2012. After making his debut in the MLB in April, he secured his first MLB home run in May at just 19 years of age. He went on to be named the National League Rookie of the Month for May. Harper also finished third in the All-Star Final Vote. At the end of his first season in the MLB, Harper was named the National League Rookie of the Year.

He began his 2013 season in styles after recording two home runs in the first game. He thus became the youngest MLB player to record two home runs in a season-starting game. In 2014, Harper sustained a thumb injury on his left hand which required surgery. He returned to action in June. In the 100 games he featured in during the season, Harper registered 13 home runs and batted .273.

In May 2015, Harper secured 3 home runs in a match. Harper thus became the youngest player in the MLB to reach the feat since 1969. He thus was awarded the Player of the Month award for May. He further put on a very incredible performance which earned him the Hank Aaron Award, often given to the highest hitter in the MLB leagues. Harper also became the youngest player to unanimously win the National League Most Valuable Player in 2015. ESPN further honoured him with MLB Person of the Year.

In the 2016 season, Harper secured the first grand slam of his career and earned Nation League Player of the Week honour in April. He rounded up his season with the NL East division win. In May 2018, he signed a one-year deal with the Nationals worth $21.625 million. He went on to receive the most votes to be a starter in the MLB All-Star Game in 2017.

In 2018, Harper was selected as a starter to the MLB All-Star Game. He also became a free agent during the season.

Philadelphia Phillies (2019–date)

In March 2019, he made headlines after signing what was then the largest deal in the MLB. He signed a 13-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies valued at $330 million. He changed his jersey number from #34 to #3 with his new team. He became the first Philadelphia Phillies player since 2011 to secure 100 RBI in September 2019. After the Phillies didn’t make it to the playoffs, the Washington Nationals claimed the World Series.

In 2014, he became engaged to Kayla Varner and was set to marry her in January 2015. But the wedding plan fell through. In July 2016, the couple got back together and finally wedded in December 2016. They had their first child, Krew Aron Harper, in August 2019.
