Clayton Edward Kershaw was born to Christopher and Mariane Kershaw on the 19th of March 1988. When he was 10, his parents got divorced, so he began living with his mother.

He attended Highland Park High School where he played baseball and football for the varsity team. By 2006, Kershaw was already known for his great pitches which he had developed over time and established himself as an elite prospect of the school. His incredible numbers include a playoff game where he pitched an all-strikeout perfect game against the Northwest High School of Justin Texas.

He entered the 2006 MLB Draft as the top high school pitcher available, and turned down a scholarship with the Texas A&M University and signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as the seventh overall pick with a $2.3 million signing bonus, the highest for a draft at the time.

Los Angeles Dodgers (2008–date)

Kershaw started the minor leagues with the Gulf Coast League Dodgers where he struck out 54 batters in 37 innings and posted a 1.95 ERA. By 2007, he was promoted to the Great Lakes Loons and after a 2.77 ERA and a 7-5 record, he got to play in the All-Star Futures Game, before getting promoted to the Double-A Jacksonville Suns, before the LA Dodgers bought his minor league contract on the 24th of May 2008 and he was promoted to the Major League.

On 25th May Kershaw made his debut at the age of 20, in a match against the St Louis Cardinals and became the youngest MLB player at the time. He finished his rookie season with a 5-5 and a 4.26 ERA in 22 games. He got even better the next season, he struck out 13 batters in a game against the San Francisco Giants. He finished the season with an 8 – 8, 185 strikeouts 2.76 ERA and led the league in opposing slugging percentage (.282) and opposing batting average (.200) before moving on to becoming a starter in the playoffs.

The 2010 season was a great one also for Kershaw, by the end of April, he already had 3.07 ERA. It got better after the dreadful game he had with the Milwaukee Brewers and closed the season with a 13-10 record 2.91ERA and 212 strikeouts in 204 1/3 innings. 2011 saw Kershaw selected for his first All-Star Game, and by the end of the season, Kershaw was leading the NL with a 2.28 ERA, 21wins and 248 strikeouts and won several awards including the Triple Crown Award.

In February 2012, the Dodgers gave Kershaw a $19 million 2 year contract, and he went on to have another great season leading the league with a 2.53 ERA for the 2nd year in a row. By the end of the 2013 season, Kershaw was leading the NL with a career-high 236 innings pitched and a 1.83 ERA leading the MLB for the 3rd consecutive season. He won his second CY Young and Warren Spahn Awards of his career, and the Dodgers rewarded him with a mega $215 million contract for 7 years the highest annual salary ever received by a pitcher.

Kershaw was a monster in the 2014 season, with a 21-3 record and a 1.77 ERA in 21 starts he was leading the NL in almost every category possible for a pitcher. His achievements earned him numerous awards including a third CY Young Award a second Warren Spahn Award and an NL MVP becoming the first pitcher to win the MVP Award since 1968. His 2015 season was also superb, closing with a 2.13 ERA with an incredible 301 strikeouts in 232 2/3 innings becoming the 11th player in MLB history to hit 300 or more strikeouts in a single season.

The 2016 season didn’t go so well for Kershaw, he was firing on all cylinders and had already picked up a 100 strikeouts by the 29th of May. But by the 30th of June, he was placed on a 15 – day disabled list because of back injuries, and he did not return until September. He closed the season with a 12 – 4 record and had 1.69 ERA and 172 strikeouts. 2017 saw Kershaw comeback with a bang, he reached 2000 strikeout of his career and closed the season with 2.31ERA and 202 strikeouts. By the close of the 2018 season, the Dodgers gave Kershaw a $93 million contract which tied him to the club for another 3 years even though he fell below his usual standards.
