Donald Cerrone Childhood Story & Early life

As a product of hitched childhood, Donald Cerrone was born on the 29th of March 1983 in Denver, Colorado and was raised by his grannies following his parents’ divorce. Although born in the United States, Cerrone has Mexican ancestry. He attended Air Academy for his secondary education and often fought other students during his development years due to an ‘attention deficit disorder’ he was diagnosed with. While in high school, he was involved in bull riding but changed course subsequent to his graduation.

After his high school, Donald Cerrone began a career in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) at the Freedom Fighters gym in Colorado in 2006. In 2009, Cerrone fought Jamie Varner who was at the time the WEC Lightweight Champion at a WEC bout. At the end of the fight Varner was announced the victor by means of a technical decision following a very competitive showpiece which won the Fight of the Night award. Cerrone illegally used a knee on Varner’s eyebrow temple while lying on the floor. Refusing to accept total defeat, Cerrone and Varner agreed on another flight which was delayed till 2010 due to an injury affecting Varner’s hand. In the fight, Cerrone won unanimously as he triumphed in each of the rounds.

Cerrone was scheduled for a fight with Ed Ratcliff at the WEC 45 event headliner in which Cerrone emerged the winner and won the ‘Fight of the Night honour’ in December 2009 and proceeded to lose in a bout against Benson Henderson for the WEC Lightweight Championship in April 2010.

In 2010, he agreed on a deal to participate in the World Extreme Cagefighting. He debuted in a bout against Kenneth Alexander. Following a positive report against a diuretic on illegal placement, Cerrone’s original victory by means of submission in the 56th second of round 1 was cancelled and judged a ‘no contest’.

Soon after in October, The WEC and the UFC were amalgamated. He went on to fight against Nate Diaz which he lost unanimously. The very competitive and entertaining fight which featured sweeping feet skills from Cerrone and weighty punches from Diaz got both fighters fight of the night honours. Through 2012 and 2013, he recorded a notable amount of successes and defeats which includes notable fights against Melvin Guillard which he won through knockout in round 1. The performance got him the 1st KO win of his career, the Fight of the Night and Knockout of the Night honours. In 2013, he lost for the first time by KO in round 1 against Anthony Pettis.

Against Edson Barboza, Cerrone won his career’s premiere Performance of the Night bonus award after putting up some entertaining shows in the ring. He proceeded to record his second Performance of the Night bonus award following a Technical KO win against Jim Miller. The KO win made him the first to triumph by KO against Miller. He kept an eight-bout winning streak for two years till he lost by Knockout against Rafael dos Anjos during his premiere UFC lightweight title shot.

In 2016 he moved to the welterweight division and debuted against Tim Means. He won the fight as Means surrendered in round 1. The performances got Cerrone another Performance of the Night bonus award. He went on to win the Performance of the Night bonus award against Patrick Côté and Rick Story both in 2016. Six days after the fight against Rick Story, Donald Cerrone signed an eight-fight contract extension with the UFC.

At the UFC Austin show, Cerrone triumphed over Yancy Medeiros in 2018 by TKO in the 1st round but lost to Leon Edwards at the UFC Fight Night. He still won another bout against Mike Perry at the UFC Fight Night in November 2018. Cerrone marked his stay in the welterweight with records for highest finishes and wins in the promotion with 15 and 21 respectively.

Returning to the lightweight division in 2019, he unanimously won the UFC Fight Night showdown against Al Laquinta and won the fight of the night honours.

On the 28th of January 2020, he lost by TKO in round 1 against Conor McGregor in a welterweight fixture which headlined the UFC.
