Dustin Johnson Childhood & Early Life

Dustin Johnson was born on June 22, 1984, to his father, Scott Johnson, and mother, Kandee Johnson in South Carolina. Scott, who is a former club pro, took his son Jonhson to the range at the age of six, for the first time.

At college, Johnson engaged in his lifelong passion for playing golf. He recorded successes as an amateur golfer, which saw him become the first player after Tiger Wood to claim at least a title in the first seven seasons after leaving college.

Dustin Johnson Professional Career

Johnson went pro in 2007 and thus earned his place in the 2008 PGA tour. At the end of his first season, he won the Turning Stone Resort Championship, which was his first PGA Tour event. Johnson went on to claim another PGA event title, the AT&T PebbleBeach National Pro-Am.

In February of 2010, Johnson was keen on defending his AT&T title, which spurred him to defeat golf big wigs J.B Holmes and David Duval. After defending his title, Johnson had a hard time in other events, but he eventually won the BMW Championship, which was a FedEx playoff event. His win saw his PGA Tour Money List rank improve from 15th to 4th in 2010.

Johnson competed in the 2011 Open Championship, which saw him record his best finish that year. He had a fantastic outing, finishing in second place. As a result of his excellent outing, his ranking moved up to no. 7 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Johnson further went on to claim his fifth PGA Tour event title at the Barclays. Despite beginning the playoff on an impressive note, Johnson did not maintain his top performance, which saw his ranking in the FedEx Cup standings go down to the fourth spot.

Justin sustained an injury before the 2012 season. The injury saw him out of action for the first two months of the 2012 season but returned at the end of May. Johnson missed the US Open cut after finishing one point short of the cut mark to book a place in the US Open.

In 2013, Johnson started his campaign by claiming his seventh PGA Tour event, the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, beating the defending champion by four strokes. Johnson also won the WGC-HSBC Champions in November.

Johnson announced in July 2014 that he would take the remainder of the season off to seek professional assistance to resolve some personal challenges. Reports made headlines in August the same year that conflicted with Johnson’s announcement. According to reports, Johnson was suspended for six months from the PGA Tour after he tested positive for cocaine. The reports also indicated that it was the third positive drug test result after he tested positive to cocaine and marijuana in 2012. PGA Tour official provided contesting accounts to Golf Magazine’s report, saying Johnson was not under suspension but instead on voluntary leave.

Johnson came back to action in February 2015. After missing the cut for several events, Johnson defeated J. B. Holmes by a stroke to claim the WGC-Cadillac Championship. Johnson’s win earned him $1,570,000 and also returned Johnson to the no. 7 spot in the world rankings. The success was Johnson’s first since his six-month absence.

Johnson’s first ten events in the 2016 campaign kicked off with six top-10 finishes but did not win the Memorial Tournament. Johnson went on to win the 2016 U.S. Open, which was his first major title. His win was marked with controversy because he was handed a one-shot penalty after his final round.

That was as a result of issues in the fifth grass that occurred while he was about to address people. His ball moved, and he swiftly stepped away from the ball, saying he had not touched the ball. Johnson went on to discuss a non-sites rules-official who decided Johnson should proceed. He eventually potted, thus claiming his first major title.

The decision did not go down well with many top golfers, notably of which are Webb Simpson, Ricky Fowler, Jordan Spieth, who went on social media criticizing the decision by the USGA. The win saw Johnson move up to no. 3 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Johnson refused to join the U.S. 2016 Olympics contingent due to concerns with the Zika virus.

In September 2016, Johnson won the BMW Championship, which was his third tournament win of the year.

Johnson began his 2017 campaign with two top-10 finish in four events. In February, he won the Genesis Open, which moved his world rankings to no. 1. His Genesis Open win made him join the ranks of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only golfers to claim a title in each of their first ten seasons.

Johnson added another feather to his cap in March by claiming the WGC-Mexico Championship, his first win since becoming world no. 1. The success was Johnson’s fourth WGC title, which moved him to no. 2, behind Tiger Woods on the lists of Most World Golf Championships titles. He also won the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play event, thus moving his WGC event titles to 5.

Johnson also became the first golfer to claim all four of the WGC titles. They include the 2013 WGC-HSBC Champions, 2015 WGC-Cadillac championship, 2017 WGC-Mexico Championship, which was formerly known as the Cadillac Championship, 2016 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the 2017 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

Johnson withdrew from the 2017 Master Tournament after suffering a back injury as a result of a staircase fall. He also claimed his 16th tour title, the first FedEx event playoff, The Northern Trust. Johnson moved up to the no.1 spot on the official money list as a result of his win.

He began his outing in 2018 by winning with the entry Tournament of Champions. Johnson claimed his second title of the season in June by winning the FedEx St. Jude Classic. In July 2018, he claimed his third victory of the season by winning the RBC Canadian Open. Johnson was among the golfers representing the US team in the Ryder Cup. However, the US team lost out in the tournament.
