Frenkie de Jong (born May 12, 1997) is a Dutch professional footballer who heralded his presence in the football scene by his outstanding playmaking skills, which made him a top target of several European top-flight clubs. One of the several forces within the Ajax squad that led the Dutch club to the semifinal of the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 1996/97 season in 2019, De Jong dribbles and agility was instrumental in the team’s success. Frenkie De Jong Childhood/Early Life, Junior/Youth Career

Born in 1997 to a sports-loving family, Frenkie De Jong’s father played amateur football for ASV Arkel, while his mother was also an active footballer. His parent’s roots in football are not unconnected to his grandfather who also played amateur football.

As a young boy, Frenkie played football for ASV Arkel. His interest and the skill a young boy like him possessed made several parents at the club admire him. 

As young as he was at the age of 5, Frenkie’s enviable skills had already caught the attention of scouts who sought to take the promising young player away from his local club. At the age of 7, Frenkie’s father felt his son was old enough to play competitive football and thus took him for trials at Willem II, and Feyenoord, a club his parents were avid fans of. Being a young boy who possesses incredible football skills, it was really easy for Frenkie to pass both trials and was made to choose a side. The young Frenkie de Jong stunned his parents by choosing Willem II. 

As soon as he joined Willem II youth system in 2004 at the tender age of 7, the coaches at the club worked extremely hard to help build Frenkie who had great potential. Most of his current style of play was learnt at Willem II. Frenkie also proved to be a dedicated player who worked tirelessly to build his skills. 

Frenkie De Jong Profile and Professional Football Career

Willem II (2014–2015)

With his skills and an iron-clad will to succeed, Frenkie had no issue rising through the ranks of the team. As a result of his great performances, he became some of his coaches favourite players, like the U-15 coach, Jos Bogers who usually referred to Frenkie as a natural player. His talents soon earned him a place in the first team as he debuted in the Eredivisie in May 2015. Following his debut, several teams tried to secure the services of the young star player. He eventually decided to sing a deal with Ajax in the summer of 2015.

Ajax (2015–2019)

Frenkie signed a four-year deal with top Dutch club, Ajax in the summer transfer window of 2015. He moved to Ajax for €1 million and a 10% payment for a future sale of Frenkie was agreed. Following his arrival at Ajax, he was loaned back to Willem II in August but was back in action for Ajax in December. 

Upon his return to Ajax, Frenkie played for Jong Ajax in the Eerste Divisie. In his final season playing in the Eerste Divisie, the 2016/17 season, Frenkie was awarded the league’s Talent of the Season award. That season, Frenkie played for Ajax first team in the Eredivisie, and also in the Europa League final as an 82nd-minute substitute. In the 2017/18 season, Frenkie alongside a national team and club teammate Matthijs de Ligt helped improved the squad’s performance. After featuring 22 games in the season, Frenkie came down with a ligament injury. 

The next season, Frenkie became a world sensation as he worked well with Matthijs de Ligt to lead Ajax to a very outstanding performance. His amazing performances saw him receive the Eredivisie Player of the Month honour for December 2018 and February 2019. Frenkie was instrumental in Ajax national treble as they went on to win the league and domestic cup. 

In the UEFA Champions League, Ajax defeated Serie A side, Juventus to face EPL team, Tottenham Hotspurs in a semifinal showdown that saw both De Ligt and Frenkie put up a great performance. Despite losing the match Frenkie was subject to plaudits for his performance. He was part of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League Team of the Season and was awarded the Midfielder of the Tournament award.

Barcelona (2019–present)

In January 2019, Frenkie signed a five-year contract with Laliga giants, Barcelona, for about €75 million. The contract officially began on July 1, 2019. On August 16, 2019, he debuted for Barcelona in a Laliga match against Athletico Bilbao which they defeated 1–0.

Frenkie De Jong was a regular player for the Dutch national youth team. He played 22 times for the team. He also featured regularly for the Dutch team at the 2018–19 UEFA Nations League and also played for the team during the Euros 2020 qualifiers.
