Hakim Ziyech Childhood/Early Life & Family Background

Hakim Ziyech is the last of 8 children born on 19 March 1993 to his parents. Ziyech family is of Dutch, Arab and African origin. While growing up Ziyech who had 4 other male siblings, was interested in football and as a result, he began playing football and soon joined a football academy, as young as the age of 5.

When Ziyech turned 10, his father died. His father’s death left him so emotionally scarred that he began to derail and was momentarily uninterested in football as well as his education. Without the guidance of a father, his teenage years became tumultuous. This led to him dropping out of school. Ziyech also began arriving at training late and disrespected his teammates and coaches. Ziyech who was playing for the youth team of SC Heerenveen was taken under the protective wings of Aziz Doufikar, the first Morrocan professional footballer to play in the Dutch top league, Eredivisie. Ziyech thus began focusing on his skills development, and he progressed through the ranks of SC Heerenveen.

SC Heerenveen (2012–2014)

In August 2012, Ziyech debuted officially for SC Heerenveen, against Rapid București in the Europa League. He went on to debut in the league, Eredivisie, that same month. In his debut season, Ziyech did not put up any spectacular performance. It was until the following season, August 2013 that Ziyech registered his first goal for SC Heerenveen against NAC Breda. He went on to record an assist that month in a 3-3 draw against Ajax. His form improved greatly in the 2013/14 season as he recorded more goals. His improved form attracted interest from various clubs such as Eredivisie club, Twente.

Twente (2014–2016)

Following his transfer to Twente, Ziyech signed a three-year deal with Twente and was given the no. 10 jersey. He recorded his first goal for Twente in October 2014, in a game against AZ Alkmaar, where he scored a goal and assisted another as the game ended in a 2-2 draw. He continued in top form and established himself as a leading player in the team. This led to him being given the team captaincy for the 2015/16 season. In the 2015/16, he continued in top form but soon fell out with Twente. Following negative remarks he made about Twente, he was removed as the team captain and thus he requested for a transfer from the club. He finished his last season with Twente as the best season in his career as he registered 17 goals and 10 assists. 

Ajax (2016–2020)

In August 2016, it was announced that Ajax had sign Ziyech for €11 million. He then signed a five-year deal with the club. In September 2015, Ziyech registered his first goal for Ajax in a game against Willem II in the KNVB Cup. The next month, he recorded his first Eredivisie goal for Ajax against Utrecht. His first season with Ajax was successful as he registered many goals. He began his second season with Ajax by scoring the first goal in a game against Heracles Almelo in August 2017. He continued in good form through the season but suffered a painful defeat to Twente in the KNVB round-of-16 match where he missed a penalty. He ended his second season on an amazing note.

His third and last season at Ajax was wonderful. In the Champions League, he registered Ajax first goal in a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid but later scored another goal in a 4-1 thrashing of the defending champion in the second leg of the round-of-16 match. Ziyech also was in top form as Ajax defeated Juventus to advance to the semifinals of the Champions League. In the first leg of the semi-final match against Tottenham Hotspur, Ziyech registered the only goal that helped his side win the first leg. In his second leg, he scored against as Spurs defeated Ajax.

Ziyech’s performance was then rewarded with a three-year contract in the 2019/20 season.

Chelsea (2020–present)

Ziyech agreed to move to EPL club, Chelsea for €40 million, which could increase to as much as €44 million as a result of add-ons. Ziyech will begin playing for Chelsea in the 2020/21 season.

Hakim Ziyech International Career

Hakim Ziyech was eligible to play for both the Dutch as well as the Morrocan football teams. During his youth, he appeared for various Dutch youth teams, namely the U19, U20 and U21 teams. In May 2015, he was called to play for the Dutch senior team in a friendly match against the USA team. In September 2015, Ziyech declared his intention to play for the Morrocan senior team and debuted for the team in October 2015, in a game against Ivory Coast. He went in to play for Morroco at the 2017 AFCON as well as the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Due to her efforts in catering to their children needs, Ziyech idolises his mother. He has 4 brothers and 3 sisters, all of whom he shares a good relationship with. He, however, is closet to the second born, Faouzi Ziyech, who regularly took him to his training when he was young.
