Jake Arrieta Childhood/Early Life

Born on March 6, 1986, Jake Arrieta is one of three children born to his father, Lou Arrieta and mother, Lynda Arrieta. Jake was born in Missouri, but just 4 months after his birth, his parents relocated to Texas, which was where he was raised. It’s unclear how he got introduced to baseball, but Jake began playing baseball at quite a young age.

Jake Arrieta played baseball in high school. After he completed his high school education, Arrieta was chosen by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2004 MLB Draft as its 31st round pick. But Arrieta turned down the offer and decided to attend Weatherford Junior College.

After his first-year at Weatherford Junior College, Arrieta’s performance once again made another MLB team cross his paths. In the 2005 MLB Draft, the Milwaukee Brewers picked Arrieta as its 26th round pick. He turned down the offer again and decided to transfer to another University.

Arrieta transferred to Texas Christian University, and there he played for the University’s baseball team. At TCU, he studied Sports Psychology. In his second year in college, Arrieta registered 111 strikeouts in 111 innings. As a result, he was named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year and was also named to the Second-Team College Baseball All-American. He also had a good performance during his junior year and was named to the 2007 First-team All-Mountain West. While he was in college, Arrieta who was part of the US Baseball national side, helped his side win the World University Baseball Championship which took place in Cuba. He also participated in the 2008 Olympics, where he helped the US team claim Bronze.

Baltimore Orioles (2010–2013)

Arrieta entered the 2007 MLB Draft and was chosen by the Baltimore Orioles in the 5th round. He went on to sign the biggest contract for a fifth-round pick with the Baltimore Orioles which included a signing bonus of $1.1 million. After his signing in 2007, he went on to play for the Phoenix Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League. He was key to the Desert Dogs 2007 Arizona Fall League win. The next season, he played in the Class A-Advanced Carolina League for the Frederick Keys. He had 120 strikeouts in 113 innings before he went on to play in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. 

In June 2010, in a game vs the New York Yankees, Arrieta debuted for the Baltimore Orioles in the MLB. He continued in fine form, but after about 2 years in the MLB, he moved on to the Triple-A. After series of recall to the MLB and demotion to the Triple-A, Arrieta finally was called back to the MLB in June 2013. 

Chicago Cubs (2013–2017)

In July 2013, Arrieta was traded to the Chicago Cubs. He was however optioned to play in the Class AAA Pacific Coast League for the Iowa Cubs. In July 2013, after starting in 5 games for the Iowa Cubs, Arrieta debuted for the Chicago Cubs. Throughout the 2013 season, he started in 9 games for the Chicago Cubs. His 2014 campaign was a considerable improvement for Arrieta who had an Earned run average (ERA) of 2.53. He was shortlisted for the Cy Young Award in the National League where he emerged ninth.

The 2015 season was amazing for Arrieta whose performance improved and thus he received the Nation League Pitcher of the Month Award for August and October. He led his side to the Wild Card Game of the National League against the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he set the record as the first pitcher to record a higher number of stolen bases compared to runs in a postseason match. He also led his side to the Nation League Championship Series where they lost to the New York Mets. Arrieta was subsequently awarded the Cy Young Award and became the first Chicago Cubs player to receive the award since 1992. He was 6th in the National League MVP awards. In February 2016, the Chicago Cubs agreed to pay Arrieta $10.7 million in arbitration salary for a one-year deal.

In the 2016 season, Arrieta dominated the league in hits per inning pitched for the second successive time. He also went on to win the silver Slugger Award, after recorded a batting average of .262. Arrieta emerged ninth in the Cy Young Award. He led his side to win the National League Divisional Series before they progressed to the World Series, where Arrieta led the Cubs to triumph over the Cleveland Indians to secure their first World Series in more than a century.

In January 2017, he signed a contract with the Cubs for the 2017 season only. He then went on to claim the pitcher of the month honour for August. After leading the Cubs to claim the National League Central Divisional title, they progressed to the Divisional series, where they defeated the Washington Nationals. In the Championship Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers proceed to be a better side as they defeated the Cubs. At the end of the season, Arrieta declined an offer from the Cubs and opted to become a free agent. 

Philadelphia Phillies (2018–date)

In March 2018, he signed a three-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies worth $75 million. He suffered a cartilage injury in his left knee in the 2018 season but went on to play to earn the second-highest wild pitches in the 2018 season. He also recorded an ERA of 3.96. Arrieta’s 2019 season was blighted by injuries. In January he had surgery in his left knee. In August 2019, he had a surgery to correct a bone spur in his right elbow.
