Born on 28 June 1991, to a white minority family in Belgium, Kevin De Bruyne’s childhood was marked by series of travels due to the nature of his father’s work. His father, Herwig De Bruyne worked in the oil industry which made him and his family constantly on the move. Aside from that, young De Bruyne often visited the family of his mother, Anna De Bruyne, in England.

As young age 4, De Bruyne had already begun playing football in his home town. He soon began playing for home town club, KVV Drongen, where his football skills attracted public attention. After two years at KVV Drongen, he moved on to Gent youth system, where he saw his family only on weekends. Young De Bruyne thus learnt to cater for himself.

At Gent, he was seen as one of the new youngsters who will solidify the country’s reputation in the football world due to the unpopularity of the then-current footballers who were constantly putting up bad performances. As De Bruyne made progress in his football career he survived on the little he earned from football and often was visited by his grandmother who was concerned about young De Bruyne being away from his family.

Genk (2008–2012)

In 2008, young De Bruyne was promoted to Genk’s first team but debuted for the team in May 2010. In the 2009/10 season, he became an established first-team player and scored his first goal in February 2010. In the 2010/11 season, he won the Jupiler Pro League with Genk after scoring 5 goals and making 16 assists. After a good 2010/11 season, he went on to score 8 goals in the 2011/12 season. He then agreed to transfer to EPL club, Chelsea.

Chelsea (2012–2014)

In January 2012, Chelsea announced it has agreed to sign Genk midfielder, Kevin De Bruyne. He signed a five and a half year contract worth £7 million with the English club. In July 2012, he debuted for Chelsea.

Werder Bremen (loan 2012–2013)

De Bruyne was then sent to Bundesliga club, Werder Bremen on loan for the 2012/13 season. In September 2012, he scored his first goal for the club and continued in fine form through the season. Despite thoughts that De Bruyne will be sent on loan to another Bundesliga club, he was assured by then Chelsea coach José Mourinho that he’ll be part of the club future.

Back to Chelsea (2013–2014)

When De Bruyne scored his first goal in a pre-season game for Chelsea, he sustained an injury but debuted for Chelsea competitively in the first Premier League fixture of the 2013/14 season.

Wolfsburg ( 2014–2015)

In January 2014, De Bruyne was signed by Wolfsburg for about £18 million. In April 2014, he registered his first goal for the club and helped them emerge victorious in their last two Bundesliga fixtures of the 2013/14 season.

In the 2014/15 season, De Bruyne registered his first goal of the season in October 2014, in the Europa League. He went on to help Wolfsburg finish second in the Bundesliga and also win the DFB-Pokal, which earned him the Footballer of the Year in Germany award. He started the 2015/16 season by helping Wolfsburg defeat Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup. His amazing performance soon made clubs calling, and during the season, it was speculated that he’ll move from Wolfsburg.

Manchester City (2015–present)

In August 2015, it was announced that De Bruyne had signed with Manchester City for €55 million, which was a club record amount. In September 2015, he debuted for City and also scored for City that month. He then was included in the final 23 players for the Ballon d’Or award. He continued in fine form and proved very instrumental in city’s first-ever UEFA Champions League semifinal, which attracted praised from pundits. In the 2016/17 season, he also came out in fine form, helping his team defeat tough opponents such as Liverpool and Barcelona.

In the 2017/18 season, he was back again in his top form. By January 2018, his top performance was rewarded with a contract extension which will see him stay at City until 2023. He went on to help City win the EFL Cup and the Premier League title. De Bruyne recorded 16 assists throughout the 2017/18 season and was thus awarded the first-ever EPL Playmaker of the Season award. He also earned a place in the PFA Team of the Year and also won the Manchester City Player of the Year award.

De Bruyn’s 2018/19 season was marred by injuries. He has to stay out of action for the first three months of the season, before sustaining another injury during the semifinal of the Carabao cup which left him on the sidelines for 6 weeks. He then went on to claim the first domestic treble in the EPL with Manchester City. In February of the 2019/20 season, he reached the 50th goal mark for City after he scored in a Champions League match against Real Madrid.

Kevin De Bruyne International Career

De Bruyne played for Belgium at the U-18, U-19 and U-21 levels. He debuted for the Belgian senior team in August 2010. He played in the qualifiers of the 2014 World Cup and also the 2014 World Cup. He represented Belgium at the 2016 Euros and also at the 2018 World Cup where they defeated England to emerged third.
