Manny Machado Childhood/Early Life

Born in Miami, Florida, Machado was raised in Hialeah, by Rosa Machado, his mother, with the help of Francisco Nunez his grandfather and Geovanny Brito, his uncle.

Though it’s not clear how Machado was introduced to baseball, it’s obvious he had been interested in the game from a young age. Along with Albert Almora, a Chicago Cubs player who he grew up within Hialeah, the two started playing baseball at a young age. As a young boy, Machado supported his birth town MLB franchise, the Miami Marlins. After graduating from high school, Machado moved on to Florida International University, where he continued playing baseball.

Baltimore Orioles (2012–2018)

One of the many prospects who pundits believed would be among the early picks in the 2010 MLB draft was Manny Machado. And just as many believed, Machado was selected as the Baltimore Orioles, third overall pick. While negotiations over his contract were ongoing, Machado was with the 18-and-under national team of the USA Baseball.

In August 2010, with few minutes remaining before the deadline set for signing players for the new season, Machado penned a $5.25 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles. Following his signing, Machado went on to play for various minor leagues. He first played for the Gulf Coast League Orioles, whom he debuted for in August 2010. Machado moved on to play in the New York–Penn League, for Low-A Aberdeen IronBirds. With the Low-A Aberdeen IronBirds, Machado played as a shortstop.

Following his stint with the franchise in the 2010 season, Machado commenced the 2011 season with the Delmarva Shorebirds in the South Atlantic League. After securing 5 home runs, he was awarded SAL Player of the Week in the last week of April 2012. He was out of action for a brief period after he sustained a knee injury. His performance throughout the season earned him a place in the SAL All-Star Game, as well as promotion to the High-A Frederick Keys. It was announced that he’ll play in the All-Star Futures Game, held in 2012.

In August 2012, Machado earned a promotion to the Major league. In his second game in the league, he secured 2 career home runs, making him the 12th youngest player in the league to secure more than one home run in a game. His top performance continued but was not good enough to help the Baltimore Orioles win the Division series which they lost to the New York Yankees. He ended his rookie season with 24 runs and 50 hits.

After securing three hits in May of the 2013 season, his career multi-hit games increased to 40, which tied him with Ty Cobb for the most career hit games for a player under 21 years. Machado continued in top form, earning successive appearance for the Baltimore Orioles. In September 2013, he had a knee injury which ended his season prematurely. In October, Machado had surgery on his injured knee. He was awarded the Gold Glove Award for his top fielding performance during the season.

In May 2014, he returned to action. Through the season, Machado continued in good form. Machado was suspended for 5 games and earned fines for throwing his bat toward Oakland player, Fernando Abad, who threw two successive inside pitches. In August, Machado suffered another injury in his right knee, which ended his season prematurely.

The 2015 season was a good one for Machado who had already reached 14 home runs in June. He was thus selected to the MLB All-Star Game and Home Run Derby in the 2015 season. In 162 games, Machado recorded 20 steals, 35 home runs and 86 RBI. Machado emerged fourth in the America League MVP voting, but claimed the Rawlings Gold Glove, for the second time. In April of the 2016 season, Machado performance was incredible. He was thus awarded the AL Player of the Month for April.

He went on to become the second MLB player to record a home run in the first three innings in a game against the White Sox. At the end of the season, Machado who played in 157 games, had 96 runs and 37 home runs. In 2017, he signed a deal with the Orioles, worth $11.5 million. The deal was for the 2017 season only. He continued in top form throughout the season. He was named AL Player of the Month in August. After the season, Machado 95 RBI, 35 home runs and 33 doubles.

Los Angeles Dodgers (2018)

In July 2018, Manchado was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He had to switch jersey number at Los Angeles Dodgers. Manchado then picked, #8, because it was Kobe Byrant’s number, and he has been a fan of the top basketball player since he was a kid. He debuted for the Dodgers in July. He also changed position, from his shortstop position. In the 2018 season, Machado played 66 games for the Dodgers and registered 42 RBI and 13 home runs.

San Diego Padres (2019–present)

In February 2019, Manchado penned a 10 year deal with the San Diego Padres, worth about $300 million. The deal was the largest deal for a free agent in the history of sports in America for two weeks.
