Simone Biles Childhood/Early Life & Family Background

Simone Arianne Biles was born on the 14th of March 1997 in Columbus Ohio as the third of four children to Kelvin Clemons and Shannon Biles. Her parents suffered from drugs and alcohol addictions and were deemed unfit parents for their children, so Simone and her siblings had to go into foster care.

Until the couple Ronald and Nellie Biles (Simone’s maternal grandparents) along with Ron’s sister Harriet Thomas came to adopt them all, Simone and her younger sister Adria went to live with Ronald in Houston Texas, while her elder siblings Tevin and Ashley went to live with their great aunt in Cleveland, Ohio.

Biles grew up in Houston and first came in contact with gymnastics when her daycare group visited a gymnastics club on a field trip when she was 6 years old.  She began imitating the moves of other gymnasts and was soon spotted by the instructors, who immediately sent her home with a letter requesting that she be permitted to join the gymnastics club by her parents.

Biles proved to be better at gymnastics than most of her peers and her parents soon switched to homeschooling after she had finished her primary education, to afford her more training hours.

Biles kicked off her professional career when she began competing as a level 8 gymnast in 2007. By the end of 2011, she claimed the top spot in the vault and balance beam events and was third in the all-around American Classics. Her final season in the Junior leagues could not have gone any better—she won the all-around events at the Alamo Classics, the US Secret Classic, the Houston National invitational and the American Classics all in 2012.

World Championships

In her first year at the senior level, Biles showed just how good she was when she burst into the spotlight by winning the 2013 all-around USA Gymnastics Championship. After a few bumps on the road which saw her lose her motivation to win for a short while, she qualified for her first World Championship tournament. She took the gold medal in the all-around event and became the 7th American woman and the first African American athlete to win a gold medal in the all-around of the World Championships.

2014 was an even better year for Biles, even though she missed the first two competitions because of an injury. She came back to win gold medals at the all-around event in the U.S and World Championships. Her next event in the same year saw her win the floor exercise, vault, balance beam and the all-around titles of the Secret U.S. Classics where she first performed her signature move, a double flip and a half twist which was soon to be known as the Biles.

In 2015, she won her third all-around gold medal, after winning gold in all four events to become the first woman to win the title three times in a row to make it her 10th gold medal in the international competition in just three years. With her tremendous victories in the world championships, she became one of the United States top prospects to bring home a gold medal in the Olympics and began training at the World Champions Center in Texas’s Spring.

Pacific Rim & the Olympics

Biles did compete at the Pacific Rim Championship tournament which was held in Everett, Washington in April 2016, and won the all-around title. She then went on to pick 4 gold medals at the U.S National Championship for winning the all-around, balance beam, vault and floor exercise events earning her spot in team USA’s The Last five for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

On August 9 2016, Biles showed how much of a force she was with her impressive 15.3 points on the balance beam, a 15.93 in the vault event, and an awesome floor exercise where she performed her signature move The Biles to the joy of the crowd earning 15.8 points and leading The Last Five to gold medals. They became the third United States team to win gold medals, with the other two teams winning in 1996 and the 2012 Olympics.

Biles’s quest to dominate did not end with the team’s gold, she won the women’s all-around gold medal with yet another thrilling display winning with a huge 2.1 point gap over the runner up and fellow teammate Aly Raisman. Biles’ victory was truly spectacular, her 2.1 lead was larger than the combined leads of all gold medalist gymnasts from the 1980 Olympics down to 2012. She went on to take 2 more gold medals in the singles floor exercise and the vault competition, before picking up a bronze medal after faltering in the balance beam competition.
