Born on June 10, 1959, in Reggiolo, a town famous for rural cheese farming, Carlo Ancelotti’s parents worked as cheese farmers. A young boy with a cheerful disposition, Ancelotti was raised in a deeply traditional Italian family. While working in the family with his parents, Ancelotti came to realize that the income from farming was limited and insufficient to cater to the needs of his family. It was that quest for a better life that led Ancelotti to try our football with the youth team of the local club, Reggiolo. It was while he was at the club, that he was scouted by Italian team Parma and his career took off.

Ancelotti joined the club, Parma in 1974, but made his debut as a professional footballer for the club in the 1976/77 season at the age of 18. Ancelotti proved to be a key player for Parma as he led the team to earn promotion to the Series in the 1978/79 season. In 1979, Ancelotti moved to the Italian club, Roma, and debuted in the Serie A in September. In his first two seasons with Roma, Ancelotti won the Coppa Italia. During the 8 seasons, he spent at the club, Ancelotti won the Coppa Italia on four occasions. 

In 1987, Ancelotti moved to AC Milan. The next year he won the Serie A title with the club. Ancelotti then went on to win the European Cup in 1989 and 1990. Ancelotti went on to win the Intercontinental Cup, twice with Milan and the Supercopa Italiana, once. In the 1991/92 season, Ancelotti won the Serie A, for the second time with Milan, but due to persistent knee issues and competition from younger players, Ancelotti’s football career came to an end at the age of 33.

Reggiana (1995–1996)

Following the completion of his coaching studies at Coverciano, and serving as assistant manager for the Italian national team, he got his first job as a manager with former club, Reggiana. Ancelotti led the team to earn promotion to the Serie A in the 1995/96 season. After the season, he departed from the club.

Parma (1996–1998)

After his coaching stint at Reggiana, Ancelotti joined Parma which had top players like Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluigi Buffon, who were young then. He led his side to second place in the Serie A during his first season as manager. That meant that the team qualified for the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League. At the tournament, they were defeated in the first round. Ancelotti led Parma to finish 6th in the Serie A. At the end of the 1997/98 season, he was relieved of his job.

Juventus (1999–2001)

In February 1999, Ancelotti was appointed manager of Juventus. He had players such as Zinedine Zidane in his squad which boosted attack. He won his first trophy with the team, the Intertoto Cup, in his first season as manager. Following his loss at the URFACup, he narrowly lost the Serie A by a single point to Lazio. His second season with Juventus was disappointing as the club didn’t win any trophy. On June 17, 2001, during a half time final league game against Atalanta, Juventus announced that they have fired Ancelotti.

A.C. Milan (2001–2009)

In November 2001, he was appointed head coach of AC Milan. In his first season as manager of the club, he led the team to the semifinal of the UEFA Cup and the Coppa Italia. After adapting to the team and changing tactics, he led AC Milan to UEFA Champions League glory in 2003. He also won the Coppa Italia in 2003 with the club. He also won the 2003 UEFA Super Cup. But Ancelotti lost the Supercoppa Italiana in 2003 and the Intercontinental Cup. He went on to win the Supercoppa Italiana in 2004 but lost out in the 2005 Champions League final. 

Once again, Ancelotti had to change tactics and formation. This led to him winning the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup in 2007. He also won the maiden edition of the FIFA Club World Cup. In his final season with Milan, he finished third in the Serie A. He announced his resignation as manager of Milan in May 2009. 

Chelsea (2009–2011)

In June 2009, Ancelotti became manager of Chelsea and signed a three-year contract with the club. He won his first trophy with Chelsea in August 2009, the Community Shield. In May 2010, he won the Premier League and capped it with an FA Cup win, marking his domestic double. After series of defeat, Ancelotti was sacked in May 2011 as Chelsea manager. 

Paris Saint-Germain (2011–2013)

In December 2011, Ancelotti took over as manager of PSG, his salary was valued at €6 million. After emerging runners-up in his first season as manager of the club, he won the Ligue 1 as a manager in his first full season in charge. In May 2013, Ancelotti left PSG for Real Madrid.

Real Madrid (2013–2015)

In June 2013, Ancelotti took over as manager of Real Madrid. He announced that Zinedine Zidane and Clement Paul will act as his assistant coach. He went on to sign Isco, while he sold Mesut Özil to Arsenal and brought in Gareth Bale. He then worked on the clubs tactics. 

His first trophy with Madrid was won in April 2014, the Copa del Rey. In May, Ancelotti won the UEFA Champions League with Los Blancos. He then became the second person to win the Champions League, two times as a player and three times as a coach. After Madrid finished third in the Laliga, Ancelotti won the UEFA Super Cup in 2014. He then went on to claim Madrid’s first FIFA Club World Cup title in December 2014. That month he was one of the three finalists enlisted for the 2014 FIFA World Coach of the Year Award. 

In January 2015, he was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame. Ancelotti won The World’s Best Club Coach at the 2914 IFFHS Award. After losing out in the Copa del Rey round of 16, it was announced that Ancelotti will leave as the club’s manager in May 2015.

Bayern Munich (2016–2017)

In December 2015, it was announced that Ancelotti will become Bayern Munich’s manager. He signed a three-year contract with the club. He was set to resume for the 2016/17 season. After losing the International Champions Cup, he won the German Super Cup. He won the Bundesliga with Bayern in his first season as manager. Ancelotti began his 2017/18 campaign by winning the DFL-Supercup. Following a 3-0 loss to PSG in September 2017, news emerged that 5 out of the players wanted Ancelotti out. He was thus sacked by the club.

Napoli (2018–2019)

In May 2018, Ancelotti signed a three-year contract with Napoli, thus making his return to the Serie A. On December 10, 2019, he was relieved of his job as the manager of Napoli after their final match of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League group stage against Genk which they won by 4–0.

Everton (2019–date)

In December 2019, Ancelotti signed a four and half-year contract with Everton as the club’s manager.

Ancelotti was married to, Luisa Gibellini for 25 years (1983–2008) before they divorced in 2008. In 2014, he married Mariann Barrena McClay, a Canadian businesswoman in Vancouver.

In September 2010, Ancelotti’s father died after battling with health issues. 

In January 2019, his son, Davide had a set of twins, Lucas and Leon.
