Virat Kohli Childhood Story and Early Life

Born in Delhi to a Punjabi family, Virat Kohli is the last of 3 children born to his father who worked as a criminal lawyer and his mother who was a housewife. As at the tender age of 3, young Virat Kohli was always swinging a cricket bat and repeatedly requested that his father bowl at him. 

When the West Delhi Cricket Academy was launched in 1998, Virat Kohli who was then 9 years old, was one of the first cricket players admitted to the academy. After a brief stint at the West Delhi Cricket Academy, Virat moved to continue his cricket practices at Saviour Convent, located in Paschim Vihar. Throughout his childhood, Virat’s father was his biggest supporter of cricket.

In the Polly Umrigar Trophy held in the 2002/03 season, Virat Kohli played for the Delhi U-15 side precisely in October 2002. Virat stated in the tournament as the lead run-getter with 172 runs. The next season, Virat was named the captain of the team for the tournament. Late in the 2003/04 season, Virat was selected to be part of the Under-17 Delhi team to play in the Vijay Merchant Trophy. The team went on to claim the Trophy. 

As India’s U-19 side was set to embark on a tour in England, Virat was picked to join the team in July 2006. The team performed well in the ODI and three-match Test series, which they also won. At the age of 18, Virat made his first-class debut for Delhi where he had 10 innings. After his father died in December 2006, a day later, Virat went on to play for Delhi where he registered 90. After the match, Virat proceeded to his father’s funeral, an action which was hailed by the media and brought Virat into the spotlight. 

In the Inter-State T20 Championship, held in April 2007, Virat debuted in the Twenty20 and placed as the highest run-getter. The next year, in April, Virat was made skipper of the Indian side that played in the 2008 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Virat led his team to claim the tournament. Following his exploits at the U-19 World Cup, Virat signed a deal with the franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore of the Indian Premier League for a $30,000 youth contract.

As the Indian national ODI side was set to embark on a Sri Lanka tour in August 2008, young Virat was chosen to be part of the team. At the age of 19, he thus made his international debut on the tour. In September 2008, Virat was picked to be part of the squad scheduled to play in the Nissan Trophy, which the Indian national team lost. After signing a Grade D BCCI contract, Virat was set to receive, ₹1.5 million ($45,000). Virat was part of the Indian squad that played in the four-team Emerging Players Tournament held between March-April 2009. 

Virat continues to rise through the ranks of the team, captaining the side to the tri-series against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. He began to reduce in form during those matches held in June 2010. He, however, returned to fine form to be included in the 15-man squad for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. At the tournament, Virat played in all matches. Through 2011 to 2012, Virat played well for India, especially during their West Indies tour. He also earned promotion to become the team’s vice-captain of the ODI team. After India was eliminated from the Asia Cup, they went on to play in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20. After he recorded 319 runs in the tournament, he was named the Man of the Tournament. Following India’s dismal performance in the tri-nation ODI series, Virat form decreased. But as the 2015 World Cup came up, Virat improved. India was eliminated in the semifinal of the tournament. Virat bounced back to top form at the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 where he won Man of the Tournament and was made the captain of the Team of the Tournament. 

At the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, Virat who was captain of the side, guided the team to the final where they lost to Pakistan. He was honoured by being made a member of the Team of the Tournament. At his next major tournament, the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Virat captained the Indian team where they lost in the semifinal to New Zealand. Virat achieved the feat of being the first batsman to reach 11,000 runs in ODI cricket in the tournament. His top form continued as he became the fastest captain in history to reach 5,000 runs in Test cricket in November 2019.
