Alisson Becker Childhood/Early Life & Family Background

Born on October 2, 1992, and raised in a catholic middle-class family, Alisson Becker’s father worked as a real estate broker and also supported his son’s interest in sports. Alisson and his elder brother Muriel lived in a community where sports was highly regarded and supported. He and his elder brother were recruited into Brazilian club, Internacional football academy. Though his first brother progressed to become the team’s first-choice goalkeeper, Alisson earned his promotion to compete with his elder brother for the position. After Muriel was out as a result of injury, Alisson was made the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. Following the recovery of his brother, Alisson had earned a reputation for being a very skilful goalkeeper that he was unreplaceable.

Sports Club Internacional (2013–2016)

Following his arrival at Internacional at the age of 10, Alisson moved up the ranks of the academy to become a regular part of the senior team. He previously served as a substitute goalkeeper for his brother, Muriel, who served as the first choice goalkeeper of the senior team. After his brother was out of action as a result of injury, he became the team’s first-choice goalkeeper and thus created a reputation for himself as an A-rated goalkeeper, making him the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper of the team. He encountered intense competition from an ex-Brazilian goalkeeper, Dida for the top goalkeeping spot, but managed to emerge victoriously and thus kept his spot through his four years at Internacional. During the four seasons he spent at Internacional, Alisson helped his side win the Campeonato Gaúcho Série A1.

In February 2016, a deal what struck between A.S Roma and Internacional, which saw Alisson move to the Italian club for €7.5 million.

A.S. Roma (2016–2018)

On completion of his transfer to Roma in July 2016, Alisson debuted for Roma in August 2016. Despite his abilities, Alisson didn’t make the first team in his first season with Roma. Following the departure of first-team goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczęsny, Alisson was given the number 1 jersey, thereby making him the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. Throughout his first season at Roma, Alisson didn’t play in the Serie A. He revealed to the press, that he contemplated leaving Roma, as a result of not playing in the first team.

In his second season at Roma, Alisson debuted in the Serie A as well as in the UEFA Champions League. His performance in the Champions League was hailed by fans as he didn’t concede a goal at Roma’s home stadium, the Stadio Olimpico, until their semifinal match against Liverpool.

Throughout the 2017/18 season, Alisson made 22 clean sheets. His performance got a lot of attention from the media as well as Liverpool who indicated interest in the Brazilian star.

In July 2018, Alisson became the most expensive goalkeeper in the world, after Liverpool signed him for €72.5 million. His title as the most expensive goalkeeper in the world was short-lived as four weeks after he was officially signed, Kepa Arrizabalaga, was signed from Atletico Bilbao to Chelsea for €80 million. Alisson was given the number 13 jersey when he arrived at Anfield.  In his first season at Liverpool, Alisson began making waves and history. He went on 20 games unbeaten, the longest unbeaten streak in the English Premier League.

In match 2019, Alisson reached 17 clean sheets, the longest for a goalkeeper in his debut season. At the end of the season, he was awarded the Golden Glove for his exceptional performance. In the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League, Alisson was key to his team’s advancement to the knockout stage after he made a brilliant save against Napoli, their last match of the group stage. In the second leg of the semifinals, he was instrumental in Liverpool’s 4-nil come back after they were defeated 3-nil in the first leg. In the final, he kept clean sheets to win his first title with Liverpool in his debut season, a remarkable feat for him.

In the 2019/20 season, he was given the number 1 jersey. After Liverpool lost on penalties in the FA Cup final, Alisson was ruled out as a result of injury for the 2019 UEFA Super Cup.

As a youth, Alisson has played for Brazil at various tournaments in the U-17 and U-20 levels. He represented Brazil at the senior level, at the 2016 Copa America Centenario, the 2018 World Cup and the 2019 Copa America, which he won with Brazil.
