Roberto Firmino Childhood & Early Life

Roberto Firmino Barbosa de Oliveira was born on October 2, 1991, to his parents José Roberto Cordeiro (father) and Mariana Cícera Barbosa de Oliveira (Mother), in a crime-infested community in Brazil. Since his early childhood days, Firmino had always loved football.

He enjoyed little freedom as a young boy as a result of his parents’ effort to protect him from the bad influence of gangs in his community. His parents were poor, and Firmino sought football as a way to get his family out of penury.

At the age of 14, he began playing for a local club, CRB, two years later, Firmino moved to another club, Tombense where he was sent on loan to another club, Figueirense. At Figueirense, he was discovered by a German scout who took him to continue his career in Germany.

In 2010, Firmino signed a 5-year contract with the German club, Hoffenheim. At Hoffenheim, Firmino played remarkably well through the three seasons he spent at the club, specifically his last season with the club, where he won the German league’s Breakthrough Player. As a result of his performance, he was subject to interest from Russian club, Lokomotiv Moscow. He, however, signed a contract extension with Hoffenheim in March 2014. In June 2015, while Firmino was on international duty, a deal was struck between EPL club, Liverpool and Hoffenheim for about £29 million which saw Firmino move to Liverpool after the Copa America.

Liverpool (2015–date)

In his first season with Liverpool, Firmino emerged as one of the club’s top striker, winning the club’s Player of the Month for January 2016 and finishing as the club’s highest goal scorer. In his second season, he played well, helping the club reach the top of the EPL table, though they didn’t finish the season at the top. His third season at Liverpool, the 2017/18 season, saw him switch his jersey number from 11 to 9 as a result of the arrival of Mohammed Salah.

In a January 2018, FA Cup match against Everton, Firmino was accused by Everton player, Mason Holgate of racially abusing him, after they both had a confrontation as a result of Holgate pushing Firmino to the advertising board. He was cleared of any wrongdoing as a result of insufficient evidence after an investigation was opened by the English Football Association. He also formed an amazing attacking team with fellow teammates, Philippe Coutinho, Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mané. The attacking team was named the Fab Four. After Coutinho left for the Spanish club, Barcelona, during the season, the attacking squad was renamed to the Fab three.

No doubt, Firmino was instrumental in Liverpool’s progress to the final of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League. He tied for Liverpool top scoring spot in the Champions league with Mohammed Salah with 11 goals. In his fourth season with Liverpool, he emerged as the highest-scoring Brazilian in the English Premier League history and also helped his side win the UEFA Champions League. Firmino continued to add more trophies to his name after he helped Liverpool defeat English rivals Chelsea in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup.
