Brad Marchand Childhood & Early Life

Born in Halifax, Canada, Marchand was the oldest of four kids born to his parents. At the age of 2, Marchand had already begun skating, which drew him to hockey. His father said Marchand was convinced he’ll succeed in the game. He was a mischievous young fellow. Marchand was also a fan of the turtle ninja toys. He began practising his autograph signature as a toddler.

Once Marchand set his mind on becoming a hockey superstar, he began playing hockey actively. He participated in the AAA midget minor hockey. Marchand recorded significant progress which saw him earn a place in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He was picked in the 2004 midget draft.

Marchand played for 3 teams for four seasons in the QMJHL. He played in the Moncton Wildcats, Val-d’Or Foreurs as well as Halifax Mooseheads.

Brad Marchand’s Professional Career

Boston Bruins (2008–date)

After spending four years in the QMJHL, Marchand was drafted in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins. Following his draft, Marchand had to wait 3 years before he made his NHL debut. He got his first NHL goal on November 2010, about a year after his debut. That season, he made a mark for himself as a two-way player, which earned him Boston Bruins 7th player award. The Bruins progressed to the Stanley Cup playoffs, where Marchand emerged second for most goals scored by a rookie. The Boston Bruins went on to win the Stanley Cup. Marchand as a result of his aggressive style of play was suspended for two games after he elbowed an opponent in March 2011, in December of that year, he was fined $2500 for slew footing another opponent.

In September 2011, Marchand extended his stay at the Boston Bruins by two years. Two months later he recorded his first NHL hat trick.

He established his dominance in the 2014/15 season when he became Boston Bruin’s highest goal scorer. After the end of 2014/15 regular season, Marchand had surgery as a result of torn tendons in his elbow. Marchand had issues in his right elbows which had been a source of distress to him since the spring of the 2014/15 season.

In February 2016, Marchand became the first Boston Bruins player to score a penalty in overtime in a regular-season game to catapult his team to victory. During the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, Marchand signed an eight-year contract with the Bruins set to expire in the 2024/25 season. The contract is reported to worth $49 million.

Marchand recorded his second career hat trick in a game against the Vancouver Canucks on March 2017. A year later, he registered his third career hat trick along with a pair of assists in a game against the Detriot Red Wings. The third goal Marchand scored that match proved to be decisive as it made the Boston Bruins emerge winner of the March. In January of the 2017/18 season, Marchand was handed a 5 match ban for elbowing Marcus Johansson of the Buffalo Sabres in the head. Two months later, he paid a $2000 fine for diving and a fine maximum of $5000 for cross-checking in April 2018. That goal also made Marchand the Boston Bruins all-time regular-season overtime highest goal scorer. In April 2019, Marchand became the tenth Boston Bruins player to record 100 points which when broken down brings about 64 assists and 36 goals in a single season. That feat had not been achieved by any ice hockey player since the 2002/03 season.

International play

Marchand is a regular member of the Canadian national hockey team. He proved to be instrumental for the Canadian side as he helped them clinch gold in the 2007 and 2008 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship. He also repeated the feat at the 2016 IIHF World Championships, and 2016 World Cup of Hockey where he was the tournament’s top scorer which earned him a place in the all-star team.
