Connor McDavid’s Childhood & Early Life

Born in Richmond, Canada, McDavid began skating at age of 3, before he began playing hockey at the age of 4. Kids were required to be 5 years or older before they could play hockey, but McDavid’s parents lied about his age. At age 6, McDavid enrolled in a hockey club in the nearby town of Aurora, after the hockey association in Newmarket, his hometown, will not permit him to play above his age group. At Aurora, a tender McDavid played against players as old as 9 years. McDavid went on to play for another Aurora team, the York-Simcoe Express. At York-Simcoe Express, while being coached by his father, McDavid helped the York-Simcoe Express claim four Ontario Minor Hockey Association championships.

Connor McDavid’s Ice Hockey Career

Junior Career

At York-Simcoe Express, McDavid played minor ice hockey in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA). McDavid also participated in the 2009 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. In 2011, McDavid moved to the Toronto Malboros, where he played in the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL). At Toronto Malboros, McDavid was named the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) player of the year in the 2011/12 season. McDavid’s excellent gameplay grabbed the attention of middle hockey leagues, such as Hockey Canada who granted him the Excellent player status, making him the third player to be given the status.

As a result of the Excellent player status, McDavid entered the 2012 OHL Priority Selection when he 15. Under normal circumstances, McDavid will be eligible to enter the OHL Priority Selection, when he clocks 16. At the 2012 OHL Priority Selection, a 15-year old McDavid was selected as the first overall selection by the Erie Otters. McDavid was awarded the Jack Ferguson Award as the first overall selection. He bagged OHL Rookie of the Month honours in the months of October and November. On March 9, McDavid reached 37 assists, which was the highest in a season for a Toronto Malboros rookie. He also recorded 67 points, tying with Tim Connolly for most points recorded by a rookie. At the end of the season, McDavid was the rookie with the most assists in the OHL with 41 points. He received the Emms Family Award as a result of his performance. He was named as a finalist for the CHL Rookie of the Year and to the OHL First All-Rookie Team.

In the 2013/14 season, McDavid intensified his remarkable performance which earned him the William Hanley Trophy for being the most sportsmanlike player, as well as the OHL Scholastic Player of the Year award, the Bobby Smith Trophy. McDavid also earned a place in the OHL Second All-Star Team.

Before the outset of the 2014/15 regular season, McDavid was named the captain of the Erie Otters. As the season commenced, McDavid’s performance progressed as always. But he was out of action for six weeks after he injured his hand. When he returned he on to represent Canada in the 2015 World Junior Championship. The Erie Otters progressed to the playoffs but lost in 5 games to the Oshawa Generals. McDavid was awarded the playoffs MVP award, the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award. He was also named OHL and CHL player of the year. McDavid’s honours made him the most decorated OHL player in history.

Professional Career

Edmonton Oilers (2015–date)

In the 2015/16 season, McDavid entered the NHL draft, where he was selected as the Edmonton Oilers first overall pick. In July 2015, McDavid signed a 3-year contract with the Oilers. He made his NHL debut on October 2015 but went down with an injury in November. Due to the extent of the injury he sustained on the clavicle, McDavid was out of action for 3 months. He returned to action on February 2016. At the end of his Rookie season, McDavid was voted third in the NHL Rookie of the year award, known as the Calder Memorial Trophy.

In October 2016 of the 2016/17 season, McDavid made history as the youngest captain in the history of the NHL, at the age of 19 and 266 days, when he was named the captain of the Oilers. He further cemented his reputation for being an incredible player by topping the NHL score chart. As a result of his feat, he was awarded the Art Ross Award, making him the third-youngest recipient of the award.

Prior to the commencement of the 2017/18 regular season, McDavid signed an eight-year contract extension with the Oilers worth $100 million. McDavid’s season was filled with impressive tactics and amazing goals, making him the top scorer in the NGL for the second consecutive time which earned him the Art Ross award. He was also awarded the Ted Lindsay award for the second time. McDavid, as well as the Oilers’ players, couldn’t help the Oilers to the playoffs of the Stanley Cup.

International Play

McDavid began his National team career in 2013 when he was included in the Canada side team to the 2013 IIHF World U18 Championships in Russia. McDavid was the youngest player in the squad but proved instrumental to the Canadian side who won gold. Following his performance at Russia, McDavid was included in the Canadian squad, for the 2014 World Junior Championship, where they finished fourth. At the 2015 World Junior Championship, he helped his side claim Gold. His remarkable performance earned him a place in the tournament’s all-star team. At the 2016 World Hockey Championship, he also helped his side win Gold. He represented team North America at the 2016 World Hockey Championship. He captained the Canadian team at the 2018 IIHF World Championship, where they emerged fourth.

Connor McDavid’s Personal Life

In 2011, when McDavid decided to move to Toronto Marlboros, he and his parents lost friends as a result of his decision.

He attended Boston University while playing at the OHL.
