From grass to grace, rags to riches, you could term the Antetokounmpo brothers’ success stories. They are Greece’s current hottest sports export and are famous personalities in the U.S, where all four of five siblings plies their basketball trade.

Like most grass to grace stories, the Antetokounmpos had humble beginnings. They weren’t among the wealthy and well-resourced families. No, they were just the stark opposite. Their parents Charles Antetokounmpo and Veronica Antetokounmpo, were Nigerians who had migrated to Greece in search of a better life in 1991. In Athens, the famous four were born.

As with many immigrants’ children growing up was tough for the Antetokounmpo brothers. They had their share of the hard life. Due to their immigrant status, their parents were unable to secure a job, forcing the brothers to seek ways of survival through menial trading on the streets. They sold fake watches and bags on the road to passersby, who fell to their trick-tongues adverts.

However, the hard life storm came to a still as a twist of fate saw them to basketball glories.

In this article, we delve into trivial and unfrivolous details of all five Antetokounmpo brothers, starting from the oldest, Francis, to the youngest, Alex.

Francis Antetokounmpo

  • Full Name: Francis Olowu Ofili Antetokounmpo
  • Born: Oct 20, 1988
  • Age: 31 years
  • Height: 6 ft 5 in (1.95 m)

The very first of the Antetokounmpo’s dynasty is Francis. However, he is the least famous among the brothers. The majority of the vast public either thinks he doesn’t exist or is just a made-up story. But he does live. As at the time of writing, the world number one search engine, Google, further aids his perceived non-existence theory with a wrong picture of him.

If you want to strengthen your belief in his non-existence, look up Francis Antetokounmpo. You’d perhaps see little or no details and a different picture that looks nothing like him. Various blogs and sites which post related topics on the Antetokounmpo brothers would skip Francis and focus on the famous four. How devastating!

Full name Francis Olowu Ofili Antetokounmpo was born in Nigeria in 1988. He is the only Antetokounmpo brother who wasn’t given birth in Greece. In 1991, the Antetokounmpo parents migrated to Greece in search of a better life. At the time, the remainder famous four hadn’t come into the picture. Processing, planning, and providing for a single person’s migration can be financially burdensome, especially from a developing country like Nigeria. So it must have caused the parents a fortune to facilitate immigration to Greece, either legally or illegally.

Little Francis was left in the care of his grandparents when his parents migrated. It must have been a tough choice to leave behind three-year-old Francis when the parents finally left for Greece in 1991. The harsh life, hardship ridicules, racism, and ill-treatment immigrants continually face, this could be wise. Saving a little Francis from the terrors of the cruel life of immigrants was vital.

Years later, a grown-up Francis reunited with his parents and his siblings in Greece. It must have been precious moments laying eyes on his siblings for the first time.

Francis’s early endeavors in sports were basketball. He played for a small local club of Filathlitikos as a small forward, the same club his other brothers played. He played with the club senior men’s team but only in Greece’s semi-pro level of 3rd tier league. His other brothers, Thanasis and Giannis, played with the club at the pro level in Greece’s 2nd tier league. Later on, he switched to football (soccer) and featured professionally as a midfielder for a Greek pro club in Greece’s 2nd tier league.

Standing at 6 ft and 5 inches, Francis is the shortest of his siblings.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo

  • Full Name: Athanasios Rotimi Antetokounmpo
  • Born: July 18, 1992
  • Age: 28 years
  • Height: 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m)
  • League: NBA
  • Team: Milwaukee Bucks (2019–present)

Athanasios often referred to or called Thanasis, is the second of the five brothers. On July 18, 1992, he was born in Athens, a year after his parents migrated to Greece. In 2008, he enrolled with youth club basketball and began playing with Filathlitikos junior team. He progressed to the senior men’s team of the franchise in the semi-professional levels of the Greek fourth division in 2010 and proved instrumental in helping the franchise gain promotion to the third division in the 2011-2012 season.

Late 2013, his career took a nudge upward as Delaware 87ers selected him in the 2013 NBA Development League Draft. He had withdrawn from the 2013 NBA draft and forfeited playing professional basketball in Greece to play in the NBA D-League rather than waiting to become draft-eligible. However, the move worked in his favor as he put in an admirable performance in the NBA Development League Season, recording an average of 12.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.3 blocks in 50 games, thus allowing him to fall in the top-50 prospect of the following NBA draft class.

June 26, 2014, Antetokounmpo emerged 51st overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft by the New York Knicks, and that proved to be the onset to prominence in the “Greek Freak” basketball career. Currently, he plays professional basketball in the NBA for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Giannis Antetokounmpo

  • Full Name: Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo
  • Born: December 6, 1994
  • Age: 25 years

Like his elder brother Thanasis, Giannis was born in Athens, Greece, on December 6, 1994, and grew up in the neighborhood of Sepolia. When the multitudes of the hard life hit, he and his elder brother Thanasis began hawking watches, handbags, and sunglasses in the streets. Soon enough, he found solace in basketball and, by 2009, was playing for the youth club of Filathlitikos.

By 2011 Giannis had made his way to the senior men’s team of Filathlitikos and played at the semi-pro level. He helped the club to the third division in the 2012-13 season before exiting the following year to Spanish club CAI Zaragoza. However, since his contract with CAI Zaragoza starting from the 2013-2014 season, Giannis promptly returned to his youth club to see out the remainder of the season.

His impressive performance saw him selected as unique participants to the Greek League All-Star game despite not making the all-star selection.

Mid-2013, Giannis became officially eligible for the 2013 NBA draft and fulfilled his draft prospective as he was selected in the first-round pick and 15th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks. On October 13, 2013, at the age of 18, he made his NBA debut. The last season of the NBA before it went on an indefinite hiatus from the COVID-19 pandemic, he won the league’s MVP award.

So far, some of the best Giannis Antetokounmpo career highlights include 1x NBA MVP, 4x NBA All-Star, 1x All-NBA First Team, and 1x NBA All-Defensive First Team.
