Haslam III’s business career started at Pilot Corporation, which was founded by his father, Jim Haslam II.

Haslam II started Pilot Oil Corporation in October 1958 along with his wife, Cynthia.

The named Pilot had been chosen based on an insurance ad Haslam II had once seen.

A month into the company’s birth, its first filling station was bought at the Gate City, Virginia, for $6,000.

It had four fuel pumps and sold cigarettes and soft drinks.

Close to a decade into the establishment of Pilot Corporation, the company had grown and achieved tremendous success, having a dozen operating stations.

However, it was struggling in debt; hence, 50% of its stake was sold to Marathon.

In 1974, Haslam II’s wife died, and Haslam III replaced her on the company’s board of directors.

By 1995, he became the chief executive officer of the company.

In 2010, the company merged with a truck stop chain company, Flying J, and formed Pilot Flying J.

The Pilot Corporation was Haslam III’s first business endeavor and breakthrough.
