Career Summary & Accomplishments

Ric Flair made his professional debut as a 23-year old in December 1972 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, against George Gadaski in a 10 minutes match that ended as a draw. Flair signed to the American Wrestling Association (AWA) in 1973, and in October 1973, his first broadcasted fight was aired on TV against Roddy Piper. He signed for the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) as a Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestler in May 1974 and soon paired with Rip Hawk.

Flair and Hawk became a force to reckon with and were quickly honored with the NWA Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Titles. He soon began making a name for himself as a singles victor and won his first singles title in February 1975 following his victory over Paul Jones. That year he was named the NWA Mid-Atlantic Rookie of the Year.

Ten months after his 1st singles title in the NWA, he was involved in a plane crash that he amazingly survived, just sustaining a back injury. Medical practitioners have ruled wrestling out of his life, but Flair’s Flair for wrestling and his determination saw him return to the NWA Mid-Atlantic Championship in March 1976.

By 1981, after spending seven years with the NWA, Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes to win the NWA World Heavyweight Champion, a fight that commenced their rivalry. In June 1983, Flair lost his 1st heavyweight title belt to Harley Race. Five months later, a rematch between Flair and Race was held on Starrcade, one of the most significant pay-per-view events.

Flair won the match to reclaim the heavyweight title, but lost to Kerry Von Erich in a title defense match in 1984; both fights which won the Match of the Year awards for their respective years.

In 1991, Flair left the NWA for WWF due to administration problems in the NWA. Flair brought with him the NWA heavyweight belt and a self-proclaimed “Real World Champion.” However, he proved to the WWE fans how appropriate the title was. Eventually, he won the belt after battling champion Hulk Hogan a couple of times and emerging victorious in a Royal Rumble match in 1992.

Flair spent almost two years in the WWE before joining the WCW on another short stay. Flair returned to the WWE in 2001 with legendary appearances bridging the generational gap of wrestling.
