Bernardo Silva Childhood & Early Life

Bernardo de Carvalho Viega Mota de Silva was born on the 10th of August, 1994 to Mota Viega Silva (father) and Maria Viega de Silva (mother) in Lisbon, Portugal.

From an early age, he had an ever-growing passion for football, and he got enrolled with the Portuguese youth system of SL Benfica in 2002 at 9 years of age. He rose quickly and after winning the 2012–13 Portugal youth championship.

Bernardo Silva Professional Football Career & Achievements

Benfica B (2013–2015) / Benfica (2013–2015)

Silva made his debut for Benfica B in the Portuguese 2nd division (Segunda Liga) on the 10th of August 2013. His great performances did not go unnoticed by the main team. By October 3rd, he made his debut for Benfica, coming on in the 80th minute in their 1-0 win over CD Cinfaes. He did finish the season with Benfica B and played a large role in their domestic treble which got him the Break Through Player Award in the 2013-14 season.

Monaco (Loan 2014–2015)

It wasn’t long before Monaco came calling, and Bernardo moved to France on a 1-year loan deal on August 7th 2014. He made his debut for Monaco in the French top flight in a 1-0 win against Guingamp and scored his first goal in a 1-0 win against Olympique de Marseille.

Monaco (2015–2017)

Monaco was so impressed with Bernardo Silva’s skills that they decided to make his deal permanent and paid €15.75 million to Benfica and Bernardo signed a 4-year contract till the summer of 2019. By the start of the 2015–16 season, he signed a contract extension for an additional one year on an improved wage.

Bernardo Silva scored his first goal in the 2016–17 season, an equalizer in the 87th minute in a 1 – 1 draw against Russia’s CSKA Moscow in the Champions League group stage. He later scored 2 goals against Marseille in a 4-1 win to help push Monaco to the top of the Ligue 1 table. He scored another late minute equalizer against Paris Saint-Germain in a 1-1 draw to get his team back on top and ultimately become League Champions, scoring 8 goals and 9 assists in the league, and 11 goals 12 assists in all competition.

His fantastic display against Manchester City in the 2016-17 Champions League knockout stage made the entire coaching staff of Man City become very interested in him, so they came with an offer that neither Monaco nor Bernardo could refuse.

Manchester City (2017–date)

On May 26th 2017, Bernardo Silva became a Manchester City player, signing a 5-year deal after his medical examination and moved to England on the 1st of July.

His first season in Manchester City was a huge success, because of his style of play, and his versatility as an attacking midfielder. He scored his first Champions League goal for Manchester City against Basel in a 4-0 home win, before putting them on course for the Premier League title by scoring the only goal in a very cagey match against Chelsea. He was the most consistent player for Manchester City that season, playing 53 games in all competition and winning the English Football League Cup and the Premier League with his team at a record 100 points.

Bernardo Silva was also instrumental to Manchester City’s success in the 2018–19 season, he scored his first derby goal as Manchester City beat Manchester United 0 – 2 on their way to the title. He featured in 51 games and directly contributing 27 goals (13 goals and 14 assists) as his team made history by becoming the first team to win all 3 domestic competitions the English Premier League, the Carabao Cup (EFL) and the FA Cup.

Bernardo Silva International Career

Bernardo Silva first played for his country Portugal in the Under-19 European Championship of 2013, where he and his team got to the semi-final. His great performance in the competition got him named in the top 10 football talents under the age of 19. He was again selected for the Under 21 European Championship and scored in the semi-final in a 5 – 0 win against Germany, but got injured and could not play in the final.

He played his first senior competition at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia 2017. He played 4 matches with his teammates and we’re knocked out by Uruguay in a 2 – 1 loss. He was again playing in the UEFA Nations League, where he played 3 matches in the group stage and scored a goal in a 3-2 win over Poland. His great skills were instrumental as he registered an assist in both matches of the finals as Portugal won the UEFA Nations League Competition, with Bernardo Silva deservedly named the competition’s best player.
