Jalen Green Childhood Story & Early Life

Jalen Green was born on the 9th of February 2002, in Merced, to a family who had roots deeply engrained in sports. Green’s father, Marcus Green, played football as well as Basketball, while his mother, Bree Purganan, played basketball, soccer and was involved in the cross country race. His stepfather played basketball in college with one of the current top NBA stars, DeShawn Stevenson.

Young Green grew up in Merced and in Livingston, still in California. By the time he was in third grade, his parents relocated to Fresno, another area in California.

Since Green was a little boy, he had always been interested in basketball, and he had spent hours in the gym training to be one one of the very best of his generation. With the help of his stepfather who played basketball in college, Green’s skill continued to improve. By the time, Green advanced to sixth grade, he was playing in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). Green trained as much as five hours every day, determined to improve his skills. 

Jalen Green High School Career & Highlights

At San Joaquin Memorial High School, Green began playing basketball and thus he gathered media and fan attention for his top performance. In his first year at San Joaquin Memorial High School, Green started in all games for his school and led his side to the CIF Central Section Division II, where they finished as runner-up and CIF Division II, where they lost out in the quarter-final. Green averaged 9 rebounds and 18.1 points in his freshman season of high school basketball. For his top performance, he was awarded the CIF Central Section rookie of the year award and was named to the MaxPreps Freshman All-American second team.

His second year of high school basketball was even better as his performance improved during the season. He led his high school to claim the Central Section Division II title and booked a place for them in the CIF Open Division playoffs. He was thus named to the USA Today All-USA California second team and won the MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year award. He averaged 27.9 points and 7.7 rebounds in a really remarkable season.

In his third year of high school basketball, and final year at San Joaquin Memorial High School, Green once again led his high school to claim the Central Division II championship, and he did it in style. In the final of the Championship, Green surpassed the scoring record set in 1971 by Roscoe Pondexter. He also led his team to the quarterfinal of the CIF Northern California Division I. Green who averaged 33 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists, was named to the MaxPreps All-American and  All-USA second teams. He also was named the USA Today All-USA California player of the year. He announced his decision to play his senior year of high school basketball at Prolific Prep in March 2019.

In the 2020 high school recruiting class, Jalen Green is rated as a five star, and the number one shooting guard as well as the top of the 2020 recruiting class by ESPN. As young as the age of 15, Green had already received as much as 15 college scholarship offers. In December 2019, Green was to announce which college he had committed to, but he postponed the announcement to March of 2020.

Jalen Green National Basketball Career

Still a teenager, Jalen Green has one of the brightest national team careers for his peer group. Green who has expressed his intention to play for the Filipino National basketball team in the future, made his debut for the US National basketball team at the U-16 level in 2017 at the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship held in Argentina. Green won gold in the tournament. In 2018, he played at the  FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup, where he claimed another gold medal and was named the tournament MVP. At the FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup held in 2019 in Greece, Green who was the youngest member of the US contingent and won another gold.

Jalen Green Personal Life & Trivia

Jalen Green’s mother works as a nurse. Green is a celebrity in Fresno and surrounding US states, thanks to the wide media publicity he has received following his top basketball exploits. He regularly gets the request for a selfie to be taken with him by youngsters.

In an interview with Bleacher Report Mag, he revealed that even his close friends treat him as though he is an NBA player.

Green who enjoys dancing, lists The Avengers, High School Musical, Titanic and Spiderman as his favourite movies. He refers to his favourite NBA player, Kevin Durant as ‘a walking bucket’. He regularly enjoys eating a purple bag of Skittles. He also has Filipino roots, through his mother.
