Dina Asher-Smith Childhood & Early Life

Geraldina Rachel Asher-Smith was born on December 4, 1995, to her parents Julie Asher-Smith (mother) and Winston (father) in Orpington, Greater London.

Her first academic education was at Perry Hall Primary School.

Between 2008 and 2014, she schooled at Newstead Wood School situated in Orpington.

In 2014, she got admitted into King’s College London, where she studied history. Three years later, she graduated with a BA.

Asher-Smith’s exposure to elite sports was through Garth Crooks Team of the Week for Gifted Children Foundation, owned by her cousin Garth Crooks, an ex-footballer.

Athletics Career

Junior Competitions

John Blackie had been Asher-Smith coach in the early stages of her career.

At a tender age, she had shown her potential, setting the current world age 13 best in 300 meters, which she ran in 39.16 secs.

As an Under 15, under 17, and under 20, she went on to win the English Schools Championship 200m title and finishing 7th in the 200m final at the 2012 World Junior Championships at a personal best time of 23.50.

In 2013, Asher-Smith made her mark known in the athletic world at the European Junior Championship in Rieti after winning two gold medals.

She was victorious in the 200m and 4 × 100m relay race, respectively.

Asher-Smith was the youngest athlete representing Britain at the 2013 World Championship in Moscow.

Her performance that year resulted in her being shortlisted for the 2013 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year.

The following year, Asher-Smith emerged winner of the 100 meters at the World Junior Championship in Eugene at a run time of 11.23 secs.

Professional Career

2013

Asher-Smith was among the Great Britain team that won at the London Grand Prix for the 4 x 100 m relay in 2013.

She also was the youngest athlete among Great Britain and Northern Ireland Squad that won bronze medals in the 2013 World Championships in Moscow.

2015

Asher-Smith became the first British woman to win a medal in 30 years at the 2015 European Athletics Indoor Championships.

She won a silver medal for the 60 m and thereby equaled fellow British athlete Jeanette Kwakye ‘s record of 7.08 s.

Winning this feat also saw her become the fastest teenager ever at 60 m being just 19 years old.

On May 24, 2015, Asher-Smith became the first British athlete to win the 100-meter race under 11.02 secs.

She followed it up with another impressive record on July 25, 2015, at the London Anniversary Games by becoming the first British athlete to finish a race under 11 seconds, with 10.99 secs.

2016

The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio was the next hurdle for her; unfortunately, her performance wasn’t much of glitter.

She finished the competition with only a bronze medal with teammates Desiree Henry, Daryll Neita, and Asha Philip in the 4 × 100 meters relay.

2017

At the 2017 IAAF World Athletics Championships held in London, despite breaking her foot in training, Asher-Smith secured a silver medal alongside her team in the Great Britain 4 x 100 m relay.

2018

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Asher-Smith made it through to the final.

She clinched a commonwealth bronze medal at Arun time of 22.29 seconds.

Asher-Smith also helped team England qualify for the 4 × 100 m relay in which they won the gold medal under a run time of 42.46 seconds.

That same year, she competed in the European Championships in Berlin.

She was the winner of the 100m and 200m, further breaking her previous race run time record of 10.99 secs to an improved 10.85 secs.

Her wins in that competition saw her become the first British female to finish the 200 meters under 22 seconds.

She crowned her success, becoming the preferred choice for the women’s European Athlete of the Year award.

2019

At the 2019 World Championship, she set another record, finishing the 100 m sprint under 10.83 seconds to win a silver medal.

In the 200 m sprint, she emerged the World Champion, setting a new British record and a personal best of 21.88 seconds.

Dina’s parents Winston and Julie Asher-Smith were both originally from Jamaica, but settled in the UK where they raised their daughter.

Her father, Winston was a sprinter while in school, while her mother, Julie, played hockey professionally till she was 30.

Her parents have both been supportive of her which has allowed her to push herself and thrive to become the best.

Partner / Boyfriend

As of the time of writing, it is not clear if Asher-Smith has a partner of if she is currently in a relationship.
