Born in La Castellane, Marseille, France, Zidane is the youngest of five children born to parents who migrated to France from Algeria in 1953. Zidane’s father worked as a warehouseman and a night watchman, while his mother was a housewife. Though he and his family lived a comfortable life, Zidane grew up in a neighbourhood, known for its high unemployment and increased crime rate.

At the age of 5, Zidane began playing football in the main square of the housing complex he resides in Castellane. When he was 10, Zidane joined a local football team, US Saint-Henri. After spending one and a half years at US Saint-Henro, Zidanes’s moved to SO Septèmes-Les-Vallons. When Zidane turned 14, he was picked to attend a three-day training camp at the Regional Centre for Sports and Physical Education, a football institution coordinated by the French Football Federation. While at the camp, he caught the interested of Cannes scout, Jean Varraud, who recommended him to the club.

Zidane’s professional football career started at Cannes, after which he moved on to Bordeaux, where he spent four years and also won the Ligue 1 Player of the Year. Following his four year stint at Bordeaux, Zidane sought to move to one of Europe’s top clubs, Juventus. In his first season, an agile Zidane won the 1996–97 Serie A title, the 1996 Intercontinental Cup and was named Serie A Foreign Footballer of the Year. He established himself as an incredible playmaker at Juventus which earned him the FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or awards in 1998. He also won the 1997/1998 Series and received the Serie A Foreign Footballer of the Year award in 2001.

In 2001, Zidane made a move to Laliga giant, Real Madrid for €77.5 million for four years.  In his debut season for Madrid, he won the UEFA Champions League and scored one of the most celebrated goals in the history of the competition. After clinching the 2002/03 Laliga title, Zidane was named the FIFA World Player of the Year, the third time he achieved the feat. Despite his top form, Zidane ended his club career trophyless in 2006.

On the international scene, Zidane’s success is considered one of the best in France. In his first World Cup, the 1998 World Cup, Zidane scored twice in the final against Brazil to push his country to world glory.  He also won the 2000 Euros with France. The 2002 World Cup was disappointing for France as they lost out in the group stage without registering a goal. He played in the 2002 Euros and the 2006 World Cup, where he was involved in the infamous headbutt incident with Marco Materazzi which resulted in a red card. Following the incident, he retired from international football.

Real Madrid (2016–2018, 2019–date)

Zidane was named special adviser to Real Madrid’s first team in November 2010, after Jose Mourinho appealed for him to work closely with the team. In July 2011, he was made Sporting Director by the club and was named assistant coach to Carlo Ancelotti in 2013. In June 2014, Zidane was made Coach of Real Madrid’s B team. Following the dismissal of Rafael Benitez in January 2016, Zidane was made the manager of Madrid.

He went on to win the UEFA Champions League in 2016, which made him the seventh man to win the championship as both a player and manager. He also won the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup. Zidane proceeded to win the 2017 UEFA Champions League and the 2017 Super Cup. He won the 2017 Best FIFA Men’s Coach and also won the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup. In May 2018, Zidane announced his resignation as Madrid’s top coach. He returned as Madrid’s manager in March 2019 and signed a contract which will end in the summer of 2022.

Zidane met his wife, Véronique Fernández when he was just 17 years old. The couple got married in 2005 and got their first child, a boy named, Enzo Zidane Fernández in 1995. Their second son, Luca Zidane Fernández was born in 1998. Theo Zidane Fernández, the couple’s third son was born in 2002, while the last born, Elyaz Zidane Fernández was born in 2005.

In 2005, a documentary ‘Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait’ was filmed by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno, which x-rayed his matches as a professional footballer.

In November 2006, Zidane made an appearance in the animated series, Family Guy, where he infamously headbutted an elderly lady in one of the episodes. In 2010, he also made an appearance in Shakira’s music video, ‘Waka Waka’
