Anthony Joshua was born in Hertfordshire, England, to Robert Joshua and Yeta Odusanya. His father, Robert, has both Nigerian and Irish origins, while his mother is Nigerian. Anthony Joshua began boxing in 2007, at the age of 18. He took up boxing after his cousin suggested they try it out. Joshua went on to win the 2009 and 2010 edition of the Haringey Box Cup. He then went on to claim the senior ABA Championships in 2010. Following his win, he is offered £50,000 to turn pro, which Joshua rejected. He revealed his rejection of the money was as a result of the fact that he took up boxing to win medals, not for money. 

Joshua then went on to claim the GB Championships, which earned him Amateur Boxer of the Year. He first made his mark in the international calling boxing scene in 2011 at the 2011 World Championships, where he won silver. He represented England at the 2012 London Olympics, where he won Gold. 

In July 2013, Joshua turned pro. He fought against Emanuele Leo in his first professional bout, which he won. Joshua went to fight eight more times, emerging victorious on all occasions, before defeating Dennis Bakhtov in October 2014 to win the WBC International Heavyweight Championship. He went on to successfully defend his title in consecutive bouts. In July 2015, Joshua fought Gary Cornish, an undefeated Scottish boxer, to win the Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship. 

After signing a new five-year-long contract with Matchroom, which will see Joshua take a cut in pay-per-view earnings, he went to defend his title against Dillian Whyte in future fights. He defeated Whyte to earn the British heavyweight title. Joshua earned about £3 million from the match. In April 2016, he defeated Charles Martin to claim the IBF heavyweight championship. Joshua made two successful title defences against Bermane Stiverne and Eric Molina before he went on to fight Wladimir Klitschko. 

In April 2017, in front of a sold-out crowd of 90,000, Anthony Joshua defeated Wladimir Klitschko to claim the WBA (Super) and IBO heavyweight titles. He earned £15 million from the fight. That same year, Joshua made his first title defence against Carlos Takam in front of 80,000 and earned £15 million for his win. His next two title defences were against Joseph Parker and Alexander Povetkin. He added the WBO title to his collections after defeating Parker. Joshua earned £18 million and £20 million from the Parker and Povetkin bouts. 

In June 2019, Joshua’s consecutive title defence winning streak came to an abrupt end after losing all his titles to Andy Ruiz Jr. Ruiz Jr was regarded as an underdog coming into the bout. Joshua, however, got the opportunity to avenge his painful loss to Ruiz Jr in December 2019. In the match, Joshua defeated Ruiz Jr by unanimous decision to reclaim his lost titles. That bout also was the biggest payday of his career as he pocketed $35 million for his win.
