Sergio Aguero Childhood/Early Life & Family Background

Sergio Agüero is the second of six children born on 2 June 1988, to Leonel del Castillo and Adriana Agüero. His father, worked as a taxi driver while his mother was an housewife. When his parents had Agüero his mother was 18, while his father was 19. Prior to his birth, his parents had to flee their home due to flooding, where they lost several documents and properties. Aside that, they battled with financial challenges which led hospitals to turn their doors against his parents during his mother’s pregnancy.

When Agüero was delivered, it was discovered that his mother was a minor according to classification back then in Argentina. As a result, his father could not sign relevant documents as the father of the child. Being unable to provide appropriate legal identification also compounded their problems. They soon found a way to sign the documents and the name Sergio was adopted and his mother’s last name Agüero was written as the official surname. His parents wanted to name him Lionel but due to regulations by the Argentine Civil Registry Restrictions which limited the use of the name, his parents named him Leonel.

Aguero’s father played football and on noticing his son’s interest in the sport, he trained his young son.

As young as 9 years, Agüero joined the youth system of Independiente. In June 2003, Agüero aged 15, debuted in the first division. Despite a good debut performance, he was not featured in the first team until the arrival of a new coach, who featured him in a group stage match in the Copa Libertadores in 2004. He thus became the youngest Argentine to play in the tournament. In November 2004, he opened his goal scoring register for Independiente. In the 2005/06 season, Agüero put up an impressive performance scoring 18 goals in 36 league matches. In May of that season, he transferred to Laliga club, Atlético Madrid for a club-record amount of €20 million.

Atlético Madrid (2006–2011)

Following his arrival at Atlético Madrid, it was clear Agüero will be a player to be remembered for good or bad after he made use of his hand to score his second goal for the club. He ended his first season at Madrid with 7 goals. Fernando Torres’ move to Liverpool in the 2007/08 season created room for a first-team spot for Agüero who took advantage of it to emerge as the third-highest goal scorer in the League. He also secured a Champions League spot for Atlético Madrid for the first time in about 10 years.

The next season, he continued in top scoring form, forging a key partnership with Diego Forlan. His goal-scoring ability earned him a place among the top 10 finalists for the Pichichi Trophy. In the 2009/10 season, Agüero did not score as he did in the previous seasons, but he went on to lead his side to the win the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup. He also led his side to the final of the Copa del Rey. He was then given the team vice-captaincy.

His last season at Atlético Madrid saw him score as much as 20 goals in the season and also went on to score for 7 successive seasons. Manchester City (2011–present)

In July 2011, he agreed to a five-year contract with City for about £35 million. In August, he debuted for the City. In his debut match, he scored two goals in 30 minutes. He soon began to start in games for City and on his third start, he scored his first hat trick in the EPL. In November, he was then shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or. His top performance earned him the Manchester City Player of the Year award after he surpassed 20 goals in his debut season. He also won the EPL in his debut season.

The 2012/13 kicked off for Agüero with a Community Shield win. He went on to put up a wonderful performance, which led to another EPL win. Despite speculations that he’ll move to Real Madrid, he signed a one-year extension on his contract.
